Guest guest
Hi Jamy, your father must eat food while taking Veenat. It must be taken with a meal, not a light one, like salad, but something hearty. Taking it on an empty stomach can cause vomiting.  Also, he should not lie down right after taking the drug, it may make him sick. He may have aches and pains, and be very tired, but most of this will stop after a month or so. I was 70 when I started Gleevec, and these side effects lasted a little over one month. If your father likes milk, that is also good to take with Veenat, along with a sandwich perhaps Good luck, Bobby a (Bobby) Doyle Brecksville, Ohio, USA DX 05/1995 Interferon/9 weeks/hydroxyurea/5 years 02/2000 - Gleevec Trial/OHSU 06/2002 - Gleevec/Trisenox Trial/OHSU 06/2003 - Gleevec/Zarnestra Trial/OHSU 04/2004 - Sprycel Trial/MDACC, CCR in 10 months #840 -  Zavie's Zero Club 09/2006 - out of CCR 04/29/08 - XL228 trial/U of Michigan 01/09/ - PCR 5.69 02/13/09 - XL228 trial ended due to side effects o4/13/09 - Ariad Trial U of Michigan 09/09/09 - PCR 0.017 From: jamshid98 <jamshid98@...> Subject: [ ] CML Date: Sunday, November 8, 2009, 5:07 AM  Hi All, My Father recently diagonalized and found CML. he is 70yrs old. Our cancer specialist started Veenat-400mg (equivalent to Gleevec)and after that blood count becomes getting normal every week. After starting the Imatinib(veenat) treatment the major change is nausea and he is reluctant towards food and earlier he was vomiting also. Now we have observed that hair growth is also stopped. Is this side effects of Veenat(even though its doing a great job)? he is very tired both mentally and physically after this treatment started because of less food and tension . If any one has experience same kind of issues ...please share..and please let us know is there anything better we need to do on this disease. doctor said that its in the starting stage and no chemo required. please put ur suggestions. thx jamy

It does have some side effects but often they do not last more than a month or two. You need to take the drug with food but you also have to experiment and see what works best for him. Some people take it right in the middle of a big meal. Some people notice changes in their hair but that might not last also. The drug can make you tired.....right now it is working especially hard to kill off the leukemia cells. He should spread out his activities and also allow for some rest periods, maybe taking a nap. But don't stop all activites even if he is tired. Try to walk as much as possible. Some people take a walk after they take their drug and think that that helps them. With this medicine your father could live a long time...and when he understands that, he will feel better mentally. Best of wishes to him and your family. Any questions that you have, just ask on this list. C.

Guest guest
Nausea is a common side effect of Gleevec. Most of us take it with food, a complete meal, and there is little to no nausea. I have taken Gleevec for almost seven years and, in my case, the bad side effects went away after a couple of years. But the food trick works for most of us right away. Guest guest
Hi nancy, we went to see the doctor last week(for the past 1 month we were vsiting the dr once in a week after the blood examination and the blood count coming to the normal stage) my father felt bad becuase he was not in a condition to take his normal course of diet. So Dr. stopped the Vennat (gleevec) treatment for 1 week and after 2 days he becomes normal towards his daily diet. But today again we met dr and now dr started Veenat again. He is bit scared of that and got desperate. Now after reading all your replies and dr also adviced the same us to take it with a large meal and large glasss of water he got some courage(looks so )  He is a person who always wanted to do something (always enagaged with various jobs in my farm house). After he got daigonized i used to stop him doing all those things. But when i read your reply i thought it would be better to be free him up with his own works. Thx Jamy From: hey00nanc <ncogan@...> Subject: [ ] Re: CML Date: Monday, November 9, 2009, 4:07 PM  > > Hi All, > > My Father recently diagonalized and found CML. he is 70yrs old. Yogurt would be good for him because it coats the stomach and is good for the intestines also. Maybe your father cannot eat real spicy food with his pill? Also, he can decide what meal to take it with....some take it with breakfast....others at lunch or dinner, but it should be a big meal. The pill might be better with bland food....like maybe a big bowl of oatmeal....but he will need to experiment. And it will be good for your father to stay active and do the things that he likes doing....but at a slower pace and rest when he needs to. For me, I would feel like I had a lot of energy and then, bam, very tired all at once. I am glad that the list can help you and your family. Best wishes, (from Oregon, USA)
