Monday at midnight awoke whining with a 102.3 rectal temp and sore

throat. Still had the temp (101.8 rectal) upon waking which concerned me, so

I took her for sick hours. Quick strep was negative (she has petechiae on her

soft palate) but she had a high white count (20,000) and left shift, so even

though she had some viral cold symptoms they wanted to be safe (because of

the antibody def) and she got the " meningitis dose " of Rocephin (two

syringes). She hasn't had Rocephin in over a year and sort of got out of the

habit of it (used to have to get it all the time), so it was really traumatic

for her. She usually never cries for any medical procedure but she was a mess

for this.

She kept getting the fever yesterday and it wasn't responding as well as

expected to advil, so we were a little nervous, especially last night when

she informed us her NECK HURT!! Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Follow up CBC today and we were expecting a big turnaround, the thought being

it looked bacterial the first day of a virus because of the immune system

sort of dumping everything into the bloodstream at first. She's very reliable

with her counts, she's usually at 5,000 and below with a virus. Her count is

down (10,000) but she still has a definite left shift, so she got the big

dose of Rocephin again and has to come back tomorrow for more. She was

soooooo sad. They had given the Rocephin in her high butt cheeks yesterday

and it really hurt, so she wanted it in her legs today. So now it's hard to

walk because they hurt so much. Poor thing.

She was very brave with the nurse and had tears in her eyes but did not cry.

But as we were going through the waiting room she broke down and was covering

her eyes and sobbing. Everyone felt so bad for her... they've seen her go

through so much there. One nurse came out with Tylenol and the receptionist

(she and both love Tigers) brought out a photo of two tigers she had on

her desk and gave it to to keep. I wanted to cry myself! And knowing we

have to go back and do it all again tomorrow...

I just hope there's nothing big brewing.

- two ideas.

1. Do they put lidocaine in with the IM Rocephin injections?

2. How about giving her a dose of Advil (more for the muscle pain than the shot

pain) about an hour before you go to

the doctors office. By then it's had a chance to kick in and you've headed off

the pain instead of trying to fight it

when it's full tilt.

Hope the counts are better tomorrow and another round's not necessary.

Ursula: Thanks so much for the Advil-before idea. I'll definitely do that.

They do already put lidocaine in with it. I wish they could give her

something stronger for the pain, seeing as she's been through so much. I

didn't ask of course, I don't want to seem like I'm into drugging up my kid!

Sandi: Nope, no headache or you would have heard me soiling myself from where

you live! :)

The doc said she looked " sick around the eyes " and I agree. I don't know if

she has two things brewing at once, or what. She definitely has a cold virus

-- stuffy nose, cough, etc. But she also had another cold two weeks ago so

she's ripe for a secondary bacterial infection. Problem is, her nose and ears

look fine so they don't know what the infection is, if it's bacterial. Didn't

check urine but she's never had a UTI. She's acting pretty okay though, so

I'm not as concerned anymore. She's really talking a lot about the sticks...

can't stop thinking about them.
