Guest guest
Jan-Maddie takes 2 mg 2x a day of periactin. She is 6 and weighs about 44 lbs. That is half a pill each time. They are very small and white. She swallows it with no difficulty. Our pharmacy could not even get a hold of the liquid form when we started this med. She has gained some weight, but more that anything we have only had one major headache since we started it. it has been a wonder drug for us. She was to the point where she was staying home from school with headaches or having to come home once she got there. She also recently had a procedure with general anesthesia and it was the first time she did not come out of it with a major headache and no nausea either! This is also one of the first times Maddie has ever been truly hungry. She has high glucose levels, but not diabetic high and now that I can get her to eat more fiber and veggies she has been at much more even levels. As a matter of fact-when she went in for her procedure on Monday they had to giv her a glucose IV because she was actually fairly low. It was nice to have her there, but scary because she rarely wakes that low. The periactin pills also come generic and a 30 day supply runs me less than my $15 generic copay. The best money we spend-next to the prilosec. For those on Prilosec-just a note-my pharmacist said it was going generic after the first of the year! I hope the compound syrup goes for the generic price too! They said they would see what they can do to get it billed at that price-I may check into seeing about the pill in that form too since she can swallow them now! Guest guest
I have had two children take Periactin for appetite enhancement with great success My PID child still takes it for prevention of migraines and cyclic vomiting, at a higher dose than he used for appetite. It is just an old-school antihistamine for which they determined that it increased an appetite as a side effect. Good luck!
