" Chemotherapy is especially threatening, since it works by destroying rapidly dividing cells, which include cancer but also normal cells found in the intestinal walls. " _____________________________ Hi Lottie, This explanation does not work for our 'new drugs'......they are not like 'old fashion' cancer drugs, like hydrea, that works by killing off rapidly dividing cells.......but they primarily kill targeted cells (they are molecularly targeted drugs). But I am sure that they still cause some digestive track upset, just maybe by other mechanisms. One can be that they are quite acidic. As you know, you need to have good gut bacteria, and also keep your body from becoming too acidic by eating more alkaline foods. C.
Guest guest
Lottie, I had my gallbladder removed 20 years ago.I have IBS with constipation and Diverticulosis also.I never had diarrhea but severe constipation. When I was on Gleevec I did have episodes of bowel incontinence WHILE sleeping. No sign during the day of diarrhea but would wake with a mess.Weirdest thing. It has all stopped since switching to Sprycel.I have put on 25 pounds now and am not feeling well due to that and the extra pain the weight brings..Always something...Overall I like the Sprycel better just not the weight gain.I am trying to lose it but still gain every day on the scale. SharonS > > After reading about your embarrassing moments, I would like to ask how many of you > had your gall bladder removed? This is one cause for having loose bowels and if you take Gleevec, you double the odds of having diarrhea. I have been in other trials, besides Gleevec, so I don't blame it on one particular drug, as the other TKI's are the > same for me. Imodium does not do it for me, I have to take a class of drugs called opiods, like paregoric and Lomotil. Lately it happens late in the evening before I go to bed and only then does Imodium work, because then I go to sleep. Everyone needs to explore their options to see what works best for them. " Chemotherapy is especially threatening, since it works by destroying rapidly dividing cells, which include cancer but also normal cells found in the intestinal walls. " > " AL B. BENSON III, MD, FACP: When this happens, the normal mechanism of the intestinal tract is severely affected. Normally the intestinal tract is helping us to absorb water, other liquids and foods, but if the lining of the intestine is affected, that process cannot occur, and so what happens is that there is excessive water in the intestinal tract, and that leaves the body as very loose stool or diarrhea. Guest guest
, Weird that you would mention becoming too acidic..I keep getting reoccuring yeast infections. My Dr says I am too acidic but never told me how to fix it just said I would have to live with it..I will now look up foods with more alkaline and see what I can do to help myself. Thanks for sharing this info..
