Guest guest
Heidi, My son is a patient of Dr. G and he has been on either Tamiflu or Flumadine (can¹t remember which) with Dr G¹s approval before. I hope your son has a quick recovery and that the rest of your family escapes the virus. Speaking from experience when the flu went through our family, the kids who got the antiviral were sick for a MUCH shorter period of time than the one who didn¹t... that one struggled to regain his energy for weeks (he is one of my kids). His brother got the antiviral and was down for 2 0r 3 days and he was ready to play. Caroline G. Hi all! My NT son (not a patient of Dr. G's) was just dx'ed with H1N1 and has been put on Tamiflu. Guest guest
I know that. The flu vaccination is not safe for our kids (at least my son). I obviously don’t want my son to get the flu, but from what I’m reading here, it may be better for him to NOT get the flu vaccination and IF he does get the flu, to get the Tamiflu shot – it sounds like that is safer than the flu vaccination. Guest guest
Hi Heidi, What a nice doctor you have to go ahead & give the med to everyone else. It's a great idea, the med is easy and safe, so other than possible cost, there's no reason not to. Some docs aren't as generous but it's a great plan. Guest guest
This makes me wonder why Tamiflu is effective for all flus, but the flu vaccination only works for some strains? Guest guest
Tamiflu minimizes symptoms - it does not prevent or " cure " the flu.  It also works to varying degrees and it is also a real possibility that a flu virus can become resistant to Tamiflu - especially when it is being used so wide spread. Tamiflu is also considered to be ineffective  24 hours after exposure to the flu virus. CR RE: H1N1 <mailto:%40> Date: Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 11:48 AM Thanks for the feedback, everyo ne! Guest guest
, We're actually debating what to do. My husband doesn't want to go on it at this point. His point is, what if we take it for however-many-months to avoid H1N1, and then wind up getting it later, and then what if the Tamiflu has lost its effectiveness because we've taken so much for so long. I'm also a little confused as to why the doctor put my NT son on it at this point. His symptoms started Sept. 6th, and he was tested for swine flu on Sept. 8th, but they didn't prescribe it until today (Sept. 15th) because it took this long for the test results to come back. I've read that it's mostly effective during the 1st 2 days of symptoms, so I'm wondering if it will even help him. Heidi H1N1 Hi all! Guest guest
I¹ve not heard of a shot... we used oral. I¹m very wary of shots since my kids react to things... I¹d rather be able to stop a pill. Once you put an injection in, you can¹t stop it! A friend of mine who is a nurse mentioned that concept (pills versus shots) regarding penicillin shots (some of my kids react to penicillin) and it really made me think. Caroline G. Guest guest
Hey Heidi, It is a little late to be starting Tamiflu to get the best benefit, but since this version is lasting a week and the fatigue and weakness another week, it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and be on it. You will not develop resistance to the med by being on it and not having the flu. You could if you start it then stop it or miss a lot of doses while you actually have the flu. Flu virus isn't like the human herpes viruses where you stop/start and can build resistance because of the latent nature of that kind of virus. But if it takes 5 days to catch it and show symptoms, and you get the flu, you may need one refill. You could wait until symptoms start then fill the meds immediately... It's just that you're at the very highest risk having it in your household (although it's still possible not to come down w/symptoms), and you actually have the flu and are contagious and beginning the immune reactions 2 days before you can tell you're sick, so already being on the Tamiflu for those two days limits replication and will reduce the severity of illness a whole lot. It would be so worth it. At least your kid could be on it ... the flu can really be rough on our kids. It was the flu that pushed my son 'over the edge' when he was 2. I'm not freaking out about the flu here or anything, and it's definitely around - I've been exposed and I'd really like to be on the med myself, and if we get it we do, but I'll be all about that tamiflu . Obviously I'm pro-take it. ________________________________ From: " theshabbysheep@... Guest guest
My wife is just recovering from the flu with symptons that match the H1N1 except we got her to the doctor before her lungs began to fill. Because of her prexisting conditions he did not want to wait for the results of the blood test as it had to be sent to Calif. from MO. and he did not want to lose treatment time in waiting for the obvious results. We were the sixth patient that morning and they closed one school nearby for two days because this flu pandemic. The Dr. immediately put her on Tamaflu and rest and all the other precautions we are hearing about. She has many health issues as I do and she is recovering nicely. I have been told that anyone with health issues should not take the nasal mist but should wait for the vacine. We have a friend that is a nurse in another state and when she heard what our Dr. did she confirmed that the clinic she works in is doing the exact same thing. Tamaflu, had washing, cough into sleeve or something simuliar, do not touch the face, wipe down and spray all areas with disfinfectent. If another member of the family shows any symptons call the Dr.'s office and they should call the Rx for Tamaflu to your pharmacy and not have you come in to the office and expose more people. H. Guest guest
Hello , I'm happy to hear the ginger works for your daughter. lol, But I had to all the way to Fiji on vacation, only to get incredibly seasick on the private charter to my destination. Upon my arrival, seeing I was looking rather pale and pekid, the girls at reception showed me to my room immediately, put me to bed and poured ginger tea into me for a day or two. No food, just ginger tea and some ginger pieces to nibble on. After that I was fine. I got very interested in some of the folk health rememedies the islanders use there, and still am. OK, as for H1NI this is from Dr. Shy (CMT expert at Wayne State) " To the best of my knowledge, there is no reason for a CMT patient to not be vaccinated against the swine flu or other types. There is no reason to think that CMT patients are more likely than other patients to have an allergic reaction to the vaccine. There are reasons that particularly patients with significant respiratory problems may be more severely affected by the flu than others " . He continued: " The vaccine will not worsen their CMT. Often patients are worried about a repeat of cases of Guillain Barre, which is a reaction to vaccines or other processes that results in sometimes severe peripheral neuropathies. There is no evidence that this is more likely to occur in CMT than non-CMT patients and is likely to be a rare occurrence. To me there is a greater risk of trouble from the swine flu in compromised CMT patients. " In response to the the inclusion of Thimerisal, an agent found in most shots in Washington State. Dr. Shy responded: " There is no evidence that this will make CMT worse. I recognize that people will do what they feel best for them. There is no evidence that preservatives in swine flu vaccine or the vaccine itself will exacerbate CMT.
