Guest guest
Hard to tell if the prednisolne is causing High Blood pressure how many mg of prednisone do you take ( what is your daily dosage) ? maxfriend1 on 13/12/2002 16:01:07 Please respond to Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis cc: (bcc: Gregg/NSW/QBE/AU) Subject: Tapering off prednisone and hike in blood pressure Can tapering off prednisone for RA cause a sudden increase in blood pressure? I awakened this morning with vertigo and blood pressure of 220/120. I have never had such high BP before. I thought I might be at risk of having a stroke. I saw my primary care physician who wasn't very talkative since he fit me in in an emergency. He prescribed a diuretic, HCTZ, and increased the Toprol from 150mg to 200mg. He told me that many people are having vertigo and stuffiness (I am recovering from a cold). I am still curious about the stroke risk factor and can it be increased from tapering off prednisone. Thank you very much. Maxine
Guest guest
Maxine I don't think dropping from 20mg to 10mg would be causing your high blood pressure... ( but then again i'm not a qualified doctor). However i was warned not to suddenly stop taking my prednisone... Has your arthritis got worse over this period ? I'm on 2mg a day... but i really notice if I drop back to 1mg.. maxfriend1 on 13/12/2002 16:15:20 Please respond to Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis cc: (bcc: Gregg/NSW/QBE/AU) Subject: Re: Tapering off prednisone and hike in blood pressure Hello , I am taking 10mg/day now, having tapered off 20mg/day gradually over the past month. Guest guest
Hi Maxine, Personally, tapering the prednisone results in increased inflammation, which can increase your blood pressure. Also, if you're recovering from a cold that probably increases it too. It makes sense. I know the crazy weather we've been having here in VA makes me all nervous, which increases my bp I'm sure.
