Reporting Severe Adverse Effects: The FDA Wants to KnowAs health care providers know all too well, severe unexpected adverse effects can appear long after a drug has won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) -- or can turn out to be more common or more dangerous than initially believed. To monitor the ongoing safety of HIV antiretrovirals and other medications, the FDA maintains a Web site that allows health care providers and patients to report suspected adverse reactions that were life-threatening, required hospitalization or resulted in permanent health damage. If one of your patients experienced a severe adverse effect while taking an approved medication, the FDA urges you to report it.
