Fly.....hello glad to hear from you. :)

Esther has been on Plaquenil for a couple of years now and I have

noticed no unusual amount of excessive infection.

Hi Fly,

I was on Plaquenil in the mid 70's, I never had any infections.

In fact, it was said to have " changed the course of the

disease " . No eye problems either.

Hugs,

Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn.

So far, 2 of you have, or are on it, and no problems. I didn't think it

was causing me any problems either, but when the doc mentioned that, it

started me wondering.

Thanks for the reply.

Also, Suzanne I forgot to mention that Esther's Rheummy is always

worried about her getting infections because of her past history of

losing two joint replacements............don't think he would have her on

it if he thought that could be the cause.

Fly,

Maybe it was a coincidence. It would be a shame to stop taking it

when it is helping the RA. But these infections can be dangerous,

especially strep. Since you work in a school around sick children

you are exposed to so many germs. Has your school had more illnesses this

year? I hope they find out why you are constantly getting infections.

a,

I don't want to stop the Plaquenil, especially since I feel it's done so

much good.

There has been a lot of illnesses going around at school, but no one has

gotten sick as often as I have.

I just wanted to check with anyone else who is using or has used the

same med. So far, you're right, it probably is a coincidence. It was my

family doctor that said that to me and not my Rheume.

Thanks.

Fly,

We could never think of you as a jerk. We know how busy you are. It was a

good idea to ask people who have taken Plaquenil about their problems with

infections. From what I have seen, it has not caused that kind of problem

for others. Hopefully, you will be able to stay on the medication that is

working.

I have been on methotrexate now for over two months, starting out

with two 2.5 per week and am now up to four 2.5 per week, but the doc

said I will eventually be up to 6 of these per week. My ankles are

more swollen now than they've ever been. I also take Bextra, which I

went one month without to see if that was holding the fluid, but

there was no change so now I am back on it. I was so very sick when

I tried prednisone, so I just can't take that on again. Is this

normal? I can sit all day with me feet propped up and still my

swelling is so bad. Any suggestions?

Hi, neiceetn. I think your doctor is quite slow in increasing your Methotrexate and/or adding another medicine. That's the old theory that medicines are harmful and you want to use as little as possible. The newer theory is that RA is harmful and you want to stop it as soon as possible. There is truth in both theories but the old theory often leads to permanent disability. Also you should be seeing a Rheumatologist who is a specialist in problems with joints. I think a second opinion may well be in order.

I think the swelling comes with Rheumatoid Arthritis and does not go down until after the RA is controlled by appropriate medications. You and your doctor need to find out what medicines are needed for you and in what dosages. Different things work for different people so it has to be done by trial and error. Good luck and God bless.

It can affect the spine, but not usually. What happens is if you are overweight, you will have increasingly more problems with your spine. It gets worse because of the constant pressure from the weight.

Can RA effect the spine? I know that because I am overweight my back can hurt. But I haven't gained any weight over the past year but I am getting more lower back pain. When I mention it to my doctor he says it's because I need to lose weight.

Some people say that RA cannot affect the

spine so they call spine problems by some other name such as Psoriatic

Arthritis or Ankylosing Spondylitis. All three are closely related and treated

essentially the same way. Of course there are a lot of other things that can

cause back pain so you need to have your doctor tell you how to treat it. God

bless.

Same problem I had.Go see a orthopedic surgeon. You may have injured a disc, have a hip that's out of place (my favorite), or osteoarthritis (also my favorite). The Orthopedic can really diagnosis and find out just what it is. If it is RA they will find that too. StaceyVicki <hoyt91@...> wrote: Can RA effect the spine? You should have a bone density scan and an xray from a Rheumatologist to check for arthritis. I have RA and need to take actonel for bone loss in my spine and hips. Get a bone scan by a certified RD and demand the proper respect for your pain. Yours, Deborah
