"Ask your doc about the "cause" of acid reflux ..."

I'd be surprised if your doc knows "the cause".

I ask every Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital GI fellow / post-doc the cause .. they don't know ... They treat the symptom of chronic acid secretion ... with acid blockers

A German doc wrote a book called "Life Without Bread" .... It contains very interesting photos of people who stopped eating wheat. A year later, their facial nasal fold lipoatrophy reversed !

I have an acid reflux remedy handout that I will ask to post in the files here. In essense, it involves avoiding wheat for several weeks ... no bread, no pasta, no cookies, no bagels, no items made from wheat flour for 2-3 weeks. The semolina wheat molecule has been hybridized to 6 chromosomes ... up from its original 2 chromosomes. This haploid protein irritates gut cells and they provoke acid release messages, something enterocytes are not supposed to do.

While avoiding wheat, take 1 Tablespoon -- 10 grams L-glutamine powder, twice a day for 2-3 weeks; also take a probiotic like JarroDophilus or Cluturelle/LGG, 2 pills per day for 2 weeks.

Avoiding wheat and taking gut cell repair nutrients helps stop the added "release acid" message that seems to be the "cause" of reflux.

Make PB & jelly rice cake "cookies" or eat macaroons, to get thrugh the 2 weeks, or eat dark chocolate or jelly beans, for sweets.

After this time, you could see how much Protonix or Nexium you'll need , if any.

You can go back to consuming wheat items, but just a serving every few days. Use 100% rye bread, or oats or rice and other grains ... this is not a gluten issue ... it is about hybridized wheat.
