Before I get my head bitten off (what's left of it) I'm sure many of

our kids can skate beautifully. I have never had the courage or the

insurance coverage to put my kids on skates.

My guys survived their first attempts on skates. They weren't great, as their ankles seemed awfully wobbly, but they managed, even though they fell a lot (invest in waterproof pants and helmets) when they were younger. When I was a kid, my dad made a rink in the backyard, and my sister and I skated whenever we could. It was small but it was a magical place for us, especially around Christmas time, when he would deck it out with lights and dress up the thrown out Christmas tree(s) beside the rink. We could skate for hours on the bumpy surface in the semi-dark (not much bigger than the garage they have there now), until our mom called us in for hot chocolate. Those were the days! Ah yes, I remember those days---way before yours though. In Minneapolis, my dad did the same with a rink in the backyard and we also skated the winter away on the lakes and ponds. If you go skating a lot-invest in your own-and get good leather ones. The ones they rent nowadays at rinks do not give ankle support and that's why kids cannot stand up on them. Dh and I just had that discussion tonight. He was skeptical about

getting the kids on skates (any such thing as plastic blades? I keep

having a vision of the twins skating over each other's hands), though

we were coming back from a movie, which the kids mostly sat through

quietly (sort of), which he hadn't predicted.

We also had the bumpy backyard rink and the snow and ice would last

all winter. Lovely memories. Out here by the beautiful sea, snow

turns to slush and mud in a day and the ice melts. Maybe we'll try an

indoor rink if we're feeling brave-- great tip about the helmets.

Our local ice rinks have trainer blades that are two blades on each

food instead of one, side-by-side, so they can balance far better.

When Allie last winter put on her sister's roller skates and proceeded

to try and get to our pool with the ice layer, we decided it was well

worth it to take her ice skating so she could see " safe " vs " unsafe. "

She used the trainer blades and had a wonderful time.
