Most chromosomal abnormalities are inherited but researchers writing in the American Journal of Human Genetics found that seven percent of children with autism carry structural changes in the genome that are not found in their parents. I'll make the obvious remark here: funny that you can take the same

study and highlight an altogether contradictory outcome than the one

initially publicized. I was sick and wiped out last week (it's my

excuse and I'm sticking to it) but did vaguely take note of the fact

that most of the cases of altered genes in the ASD test subjects were

not echoed in their parents. The press spin we heard first

highlighted what was actually the minority discovery of the study-

the 1% (it was 1%, right?) of cases in which the morphed gene was

also found in a parent as well.

This is a little like the thimerosal/tic study which released the PR

report saying the study found that e-hg wasn't linked to cognitive

disorders. Except on closer inspection of the actual study text, the

study did find substantial correlation between e-hg exposure and

language delay, simple and complext tics, etc.. Ugh.
