Guest guest
I saw Leeza. I was sort of disappointed that they forgot to leave out the fact that children with DS ARE beautiful BEFORE surgery! It's not a " deformation " that they are " fixing. " I hate to say this, but that little girl on the show was a beautiful little girl before surgery, afterwards, her eyes and nose looked odd to me. It's been my experience (working with a doctor who favored RPS in children with DS while in Jerusalem) that this is common and that the surgery itself is way too painful for children. They never even addressed the fact that it is very very painful! The women who claimes that a " cure " is on the way... well, it's my personal opinion that even if we can alter the current developmental process of children with DS (so called " normalize " their developmental status) then why must they also get rid of the facial features?? Won't society then look at people with DS as just people with DS... ya know, that genetic thing that doesn't effect the development?? Why must everything be changed? And how in the world do you explain to a 5 year old (the age of the boy of the women who wanted the surgery for her son) that Mommy and Daddy want to change his physical features because they are not good enough for society. Haven't they been telling him for 5 years that he is beautiful?? I wonder, I wonder. So, that's my take. JMO!
