vaccinating women in labor?

Just this afternoon I too was at my son's OT. The owner of the practice had a baby a few weeks ago and was telling me that while she was being prepped for a c/section and already medicated, she was told she had to have a DaPT shot in order to "pass the vaccine through her breast milk." She was surprised but felt too overwhelmed to put up a fight. She then had a VERY bad adverse reaction to the shot - fever, sweats, vomiting (sounds like perhaps seizures). She said recovering from the vaccine was far worse than recovering from the surgery.

I have worked in the birthing and breastfeeding community for a dozen years and I have NEVER heard of this practice. She is bringing me the paperwork she was given to review but until I read your post and the responses to it I thought perhaps this particular hospital (a massive baby factory) was trying to cover up a pertussis outbreak in the hospital. Now I don't know what to think. Does anyone know anything more about this maternal vaccination practice? I haven't had a baby in 7 years but my kid's OT had twins in the same hospital less than three years ago and was given no vaccines.

Our OT is expecting, the owner of the practice was cradling her 2 week old baby boy. I lectured them for over an hour. NO VACCINES. Period. The new mom told me they pressured her to have a DPaT so she could pass it along to her newborn via breast milk. I almost puked. If they can't get the kids, they get the breastfeeding mothers.I forwarded all this new information to them.Anyone else hear of them immunizing the moms? This has to be a new antic....Sophia"

Why wouldn't they route her to another hosp. Or why didn't send her

to Isolation Unit -- and keep that unit free of the outbreak. That

is insane!!!!!

I hope the New Mom beefs up her Vit C, Cod Liver oil, Mult Vitamins

lots of fresh friuts and veggies.

I'm in nursing school, have never heard of that but I've not had labor

& delivery yet, either. My last baby was 5 yrs ago, never any mention,

but it was in Sept. I agree, I think they were trying to cover an

outbreak.

This sounds like some kind of undisclosed study or experiment to me. I would

have never

consented to it-even before knowing what I know now.
