Guest guest
What a wonderful experience for you . WOW! As for your reaction to the other child, I do think that is normal. Our kids have what I feel are subtle features, which is why I think we often get quizzical looks from people. I also feel that the population in general handles physical deformities better than mental ones. I commend you for taking the opportunity to reach out to this child's mother and asking questions. We would all rather have and honest question asked than a stare I believe. I learned very early on that there are approximately 126 syndromes all with physical features. I have found it helpful when Rudy was in ECI and after he started school to research the different syndromes and ailments the kids we came in contact with had. It made me more empathetic, knowledgeable, and often helpful to the aids and even some of the parents. I lived in a very very small low income area where the majority of parents were not well educated and it was helpful to them to have another parent explain some things to them. Doctors, therapists, and educators tend to use undeciferable language. You would be amazed at the number of parents who do not even know what an ARD is and their kids have been in school for a few years. I have always been very pro advocate and I feel it is our duty as involved parents to reach out to others who may not have the resources or knowledge to help their kids of all ailments. Ok, I will now get off my soap box but will leave you with one last comment. Since Rudy was very small, I have given what I call " show & tells " with him for medical students and at his schools. I have found that this not only educated the adults and children but also released the fear of the unknown so they were better able to interact not only with Rudy but with other parents and children with disabilities. I hope you will all forgive my long windedness (?????) but I just feel very strongly about this. Thanks for listening. mom to Rudy (ds) & 13 & TJ
Guest guest
I had a similar reaction to many of the kids in Nick's first centerbased class. I thanked God everyday that Nick ONLY had ds.
