Re: Vitamin D level question

I tested low when I still had the tumor, and I continue to test low. However,

I'm skeptical of the whole Vitamin D craze in general. When I last spoke with my

doctor about it, the only studies done showing that supplementation helped

anybody at all were in northern European males, over age 50, with a previous

history of cardiac events. As I am neither northern European, male, or over 50,

and have no history of cardiac events, I don't see any proof that there is a

benefit for me to supplement Vit D.

I did try it once, long before my PA was diagnosed. To this day I don't know if

the 2000 IU's my clueless then-doctor prescribed interacted with one of the many

HTN meds I was on at the time, or what, but I'm convinced that it almost killed

me. While on Vit D, I had the worst palpitations of my life, my heart was

racing, and I felt like I was going to die. I stopped taking the Vit D, and

within a week I felt better. Never again.

The thing about the whole Vitamin D craze that make no sense to me is this - we

don't really get it from food, we get it from sun exposure. I live in southern

California, hike or go to the beach several times a week, and refuse to use

sunscreen (sunscreens are known carcinogens - I don't use any cosmetics for this

reason). So the usual blame it on sunscreen or lack of outdoor time doesn't

apply to me, yet I still test really low.

I'm convinced that something is amiss here - either we all have wildly varying

" normal " ranges, or something is wrong with the testing method. Even though my

labs show low Vit D, since my surgery I feel fine and don't have any of the

usual symptoms of deficiency (supposedly bone pain, respiratory problems, and

thyroid issues are typical).

We had a discussion here not too long ago about how many of us tested low - IIRC

the majority of responders did.

figured I " d been inside all winter, so my summer in the sun would help. I'm very

pale, so I wear sunscreen religiously, but I try to wait a bit before applying

now.

I keep saying somethings wrong with the range or the testing because nearly every single person on here who's had theirs tested is low. We can't all be THAT deficient especially with everything VIT D fortified.

The institute of health has raised their recommendations is why many

come in low. I presume they did it because they found it too low to

provide the necessary protection. That is why the supplement in dairy

products and foods isn't high enough.

If you go to WebMd they have a good explaination and list of conditions

that may be affected. Since I am starting to approach the advanced age,

I no longer spend 8-10 hours in the field or operating a ski lift or in

the front seat of a bus I decided I should pay attention. I read the

list and decided broken bones , cancer, dementia, etc. are things I

prefer to avoid if at all possible but the choice is yours. I have not

experienced any side effects and can handle one more pill a week,

afterall I used to take 18 a day!

Some recommend a level of 20 as lower limit of "normal" rather than 30. So you would be close to this "normal".
