Guest guest
At the request of many people, here is the list of modules. Steph As far as how these are taught, I will try to give you a decent explanation. First, the child must be able to receptively identify the card. Next, you would begin the RFFC procedure (Receptive by Feature, Function, and Class). A field of cards is laid on the table and you give the instruction: " Touch, show me, where's the one that......... " The child touches the card as the response. The next component is the Intraverbal. This is telling you the item you are describing without cards present. (If the card is present, then it is a combo of tact and intraverbal). So you would give the instruction: " Tell me, what''s the, do you know something that....... " The response is the child tells you the name of the object. There is also a reversal component where after they tell you the item name you reverse the question and they give you the feature, function or class. Ex. " What's something that has pedals? " Child- " bike " " A bike is something that has.... " Child - " pedals " " What does a bike have? " Child- " A bike has pedals. " These items are taught in a structured teaching situation like at the table. When they are considered mastered, we often incorporate them into structured conversations (write back if you would like details on this). Teaching procedures Although I've listed these in order, you don't have to do one step at a time. Some skills must be present before moving on, rec ID for RFFC and tacting for intraverbals, but if they have all the skills the steps can be started together. With 2 children I work with, we introduce the RFFC, Intraverbal and reversal all together. Example of all of the skills combined: T=therapist C=child Target=bike T- " Touch the one you ride " C-(Touches bike) RFFC T-(Removes cards) " What's something that you ride? " C- " Bike " INTRAVERBAL T- " A bike is something you.... " C- " ride " INTRAVERBAL REVERSAL T- " What do you do with a bike? " C- " You ride a bike/A bike is something you ride/etc. " INTRAVERBAL REVERSAL It's important to really vary the language in this and the emphasis is on it being natural. Not only do you want the therapist to use natural/novel language, the more variability in the child's language the better. The response form for the intraverbal can be words or sign. When we did this with a child who used sign, we did not do the reversal b/c of the amount of time it took to teach a sign. He is happily using words across all programs and manding these days and we now run the reversal with words. Also, it's not always necessary to run the above sequence exactly as it's written. That serves more of a framework so that skills are not always presented in such a structured sequence. Targets The number of targets we run varies from child to child. We introduce the modules as a whole and usually keep it around until all of the targets have met criteria for mastery. Some kids only do 3-4 modules (10-20 targets), another keeps about 8 (35-50 targets). This should be adjusted for each child. Whenever a module is finished we just add in another one. On our white boards, it has been helpful to erase or somehow mark the targets within a module that are " mastered " in probes. The old ones still get done but we have better focus on the components that are still being acquired. Mastery Criteria differs, though it's usually 2-3 days in probing. This means that we probe by asking without cards the intraverbal questions. The answer has to be quick and unprompted to be considered mastered. I have a few examples of probe sheets and am working on converting them from hard copies to something I could send via Email. We have found that sometimes one component of a module is not mastered and we have handled this different ways. If it's been around for a long time and seems to be holding us up, we might decide it's not very functional for the child and get rid of it. If it's something that is the response for several targets (i.e., food) and we are not getting the response everytime in probes, we might master it if all of the therapists are confident they have the response but it's just not showing up. In cases like this we have also combined it with another component (food you eat for breakfast-cereal) to give the child a better idea of what we're looking for. 1.
