I'd like to know if those of you who have turned around your children for the most part are albe to get your kids off the special diet or is it something that needs to be kept to forever or much longer? Maurine

Hi Maurine

I just posted something similar above re: SCD - well more about doing it vs.

gfcf..the more

I think about it and read about it, I feel that we'll eventually get there. We

saw such

improvement with gf/cf and neither of mine has horrible gut issues, but I think

the whole

yeast thing is what will get us there. Many at the DAN conference asked this

same

question...First i think the answer highly depends on the child - does the child

have a gut

that's been highly damaged by eating things they're sensitive to for a long

time? What are

the other factors influencing the child's health, etc.. We've only done the

gf/cf and i have

heard of folks after quite awhile, and after their child was in a much healthier

place,

attempting some re-introductions... Once the gut is healed, I think the feeling

is that

foods that were previously not tolerated, may be ok. Some parents re-run the IgG

and IgE..

Some rely on digestive enzymes...When we went gf/cf and despite still having

more junk

than I'd like in the diet, I can tell you that my taste buds have changed. I

dont have many

of the carb cravings I did a year or so ago. My children sometimes get bummed

they can't

have what their friends are having, but I almost always can send something (for

special

occasions) that's nearly identical and just as tasty. It's funny cause the kids'

preschool

(they feed them) now asks me occasionally for my gf/cf recipes for certain

items. It seems

when I make, esp the gf/cf baked goods that they're a favorite of the class...I

realize this

will be a lot tougher on SCD, but that's why I'm interested in trying it and

getting a handle

on the yeast now....My son will start Kindergarten in the Fall and the

additional peer

pressure may make it hard. We're fotunate to live in a pretty granola/organic

part of

CA...that helps a bit...Anyway, I think the answer to your question is that once

gut health

is restored, diet re-introductions can be attempted and monitored. The thing

I've learned

thru all this tho, is that much of the diet-stuff, is really just about eating

healthy. I try to

tell my kids we're not on a " special diet " ...we're simply eating healthier...

Hi Maureen,

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen that question.....

I don't know if anyone knows the answer to this question. For sure, there are

some that

can come off. It really depends on the child, their specific issues and how

well they are

able to clear the toxins and pathogens and how well the gut recovers. Judy

Herod, Elaine

Gottschall's daughter, did the diet until she was about 20 if I remember

correctly and she

was pretty severely affected as a child.

Personally, I don't think anyone should be drinking cows milk or consuming large

amounts

of complex carbs and grains... I think these are really toxic to most of us.

But, in time we'll learn more as these children get old. My son is still on the

diet and I am

not risking taking him off at this point. I'm going to keep going as long as I

need to, to

make sure he has every chance possible of living the best life he can.

You should go to Amazon.com and order Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine

Gottschall.

Lot's of recepies in there.

My son takes dried fruit as snacks and has hamburger, turkeyburgers, or 100%

meat

hotdogs (Koshar... 100% meat no fillers, etc).
