Guest guest
Could not control it with diet. Went on glucofage for two weeks but that wasn't enough - so now I am on both insulin (by injection) and continue the glucofage. Have found the ZONE diet pretty good - trying to control the carbs. I know it is the predisone (17 mgs) that is giving the glucose readings a problem - can't wait to reduce the predisone - also on 50 mgs of immuran. Let me know how you make out - It is always good to share experiences ; but everyone reacts differently. Try to have a good day.
Guest guest
Dear Jenna and : I'm also struggling with prednisone induced diabetes. I was very interested in your remarks, . I've noticed that there is a peak time for my blood sugar levels and was wondering if it was due to the peak prednisone times. It makes sense. I've also been trying to keep the carbs to a minimum and am finding it challenging. It's hard to control the fat with doing higher protein, and I also notice that my liver doesn't seem to like those higher protein meals (lots of right side pain afterward). I'm not on insulin yet, but have an appointment to see the endocrinologist (sp) on the 14th and figure that he'll probably put me on it. My blood sugar levels have been pretty high. I've been keeping track for a couple of weeks now (got a monitor finally), so hopefully that will help at the appointment. Hopefully I won't have to be at the higher level of prednisone for that much longer (at 20 now), but I know that the blood sugar will probably be an issue until I can get weaned back down to my usual maintenance dose of around 8 to 10 mgs. Guest guest
I am surprised that your doctor will let you have glucophage. That is in the metformin family of drugs and I was told that glucophage could damage my liver even more. As I am allergic to sulfa based drugs, and glucophage is ruled out, I am on insulin. In fact, there have been people without liver disease (who just have diabetes) who have had liver damage from glucophage. Gerry, can you help us out here? Guest guest
.....I don't know much about diabetes or glucophage ......but from what I was able to find out....... Glucophage works by suppressing the livers ability to produce and introduce sugar into the bloodstream, it does not make the pancreas produce more insulin.. While it doesn't neccessarily damage the liver it is contraindicated in those who have liver damage and liver disease.. and as such should be used very carefully or not at all.. I pretty sure it's not a sulfa drug and has fairly low side effects per se. It is also used by some body builders as a substitute for illegal anobolic steroids.... I guess somethig to do with lactic acid...(which is why those with liver damage should not use it as they are suceptable to lactic acidosis...) I'l send a few sites I found.... love jerry

Guest guest
Hi Gloria! I am a diabetic as well as have RA and yes, prednisone throws my sugar off!!!!!! It¡Çs horrible! Carla -----Original Message----- From: gloriarex@... [mailto:gloriarex@...] Sent: Monday, September 08, 2003 11:32 PM To: Rheumatoid Arthritis Subject: prednisone induced diabetes I was just wondering if anyone else has high blood sugar due to prolonged prednisone use. My doctor said my numbers were high again. I offered to cut out the sugar (as I sit here with a small bowl of sherbet) to see if that made a difference. Does anyone else suffer from this? I've been on prednisone for over two years now from doses as high as 60 mg to my present 2mg/day. Mainly in the past year and a half, it's been a slow taper from 10 mg. gloria Your use of is subject to the Terms of Service.

Guest guest
what other medicine if I may ask? I am sure that is why I haven't put on prednisone yet. I am already on glucophage. Is anyone else dealing with carpal tunnel and arthritis in your hands? -----Original Message-----From: hereagain02 [mailto:loveliness76@...]Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 1:18 AMRheumatoid Arthritis Subject: Re: prednisone induced diabetes> I was just wondering if anyone else has high blood sugar due to prolonged > prednisone use. My doctor said my numbers were high again. I offered I thought you were only supposed to tak prednisone for short periods of time. I have seen people who were on it for long periods of time have terrible side effects. My mother was on it for a 6 week cycle and had terrible side effects herself. -- Kara Hoover Check out my website! Guest guest
Although prednisone in high doses is only used for short periods of time, at lower doses (5 - 10 mg per day) it can often be a long term therapy. For people in that group, the side effects need to be closely watched. High blood sugar is one potential problem, and another is that prednisone pulls calcium from the bones, potentially leading to osteoporosis. Guest guest
I did gain some weight - but not more than 7% of my normal body weight. I don't think this is enough in and of itself to cause diabetes. What I want to know is if some people were able to control their sugar levels by limiting sugar - not necessarily just losing weight, which I think is difficult when you're on prednisone anyway. gloria
