Guest guest
Dear Terri and Others interested, Language for Learning is a language program for ESL or language delayed kids. You could request a free catalog by calling 1-888-SRA.4543 or get info thru www.sra4kids.com It is published by McGraw Hill a textbook publisher. I noticed in their catalog they also have a program called Reading for Understanding Grades 1-12 that looked good. My son is six and hyperlexic. He was recently tested by a psychologist and his reading comprehension was excellent. I like the Language for Learning program because it is comprehensive and organized. It has a placement test to determine where to start your child in the program. Some of the skills it covers are: actions, descriptions of objects, Information and background knowledge, instructional words and problem- solving concepts, classification, problem solving strategies and applications, categories, absurdities etc....It is four big binders with workbooks to go with them. I really like the way it teaches rules for classifications so that kids can determine themselves if an item fits the classification...it teaches them when and how to apply rules. It is different than just teaching your child to memorize. It has a teacher's guide and any literate parent could do the program with their child themselves. It tells you exactly what to say. The only problem is that they write the instructions on the side of the picture so I have to cover it up when I do it with my son!! Also, it comes in packages of 5, so you may be able to find other people to go in with you. I had to really convince the sales rep that I didn't need 5. Maybe they would let you buy a sample kit, or you may be able to convince your school to get it(I didn't try that, because my son is not in special education in any way.) Language for learning is for k-2, and then they have Distar Language I and II for grades 2-4. The catalog I have is called Answers. The program does colors and a lot of stuff. They also have stories built into the program that you read to your child. I think the cost is $486.(for a set of 5!) Schools get to keep sample kits for free though. Maybe your school could request a sample kit to look at. Then they could determine whether they wanted to purchase it for a school program, if not, they still get the sample kit. The school could use it for any child with any language delay population, not just autistic kids, like ESL kids. Good Luck. Truly:)
