Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I have had RA for 19 years now. I've tried most of the medicines out there, but none seem to work well. Anyway, I've been having less swelling but more pain than ever and the joints are getting weaker. And changing in their appearance. I thought the main cause of pain in RA was the swelling.
Guest guest
I have heard of people with lots of pain but almost no swelling and others with lots of swelling but almost no pain. I don't think there is any necessary relationship between pain and swelling. If things are getting worse you should call your doctor and make sure there is a path forward to make things improve. If your doctor doesn't have reasonable suggestions it is probably time for a second opinion. Good luck and God bless. Guest guest
My doctor always asks me if I have had swelling and if I have had a lot of pain. I tell him I can't always tell if I'm swollen but I can tell him where the pain is. I don't think they are one in the same. Where I have permanent damage, it doesn't swell so much but it sure does hurt. - > I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I have had RA > for 19 years now. Guest guest
, Swelling indicates a build up of synovial fluid around the joint, shich indicates active degeneration usually. The joint is trying to lubricate the joint because the cartilage is being damaged. The NSAIDs or steroids is to prevent swelling and inflamation. Guest guest
Thanks, It's just I can't tell if I'm swollen - I can only tell if I'm in pain. Am I the only one like that? - > > > I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I have had > > RA > > > for 19 years now. Guest guest
Personally I would say no. I can't tell either. My first visit to my former rheumy was an eye opener for me. He said " your hands are swollen " I replied " they are? I thought I just had chubby hands! " I was put on dieretics and now I can see how swollen they were, but I still don't see the swelling in my knuckles usually. Personally I haven't figured out the morning stiffness bit. I know my feet get stuck if I cross my ankles or my hand will get stuck in position if I put my hand on my hip for too long. Is this the stiffness that you all are waking up with?? My former rheumy found me very frustrating because I couldn't talk the " lingo " , but I just didn't understand and I'm still learning. My new rheumy has more patience, thank God. *hugs* ----- Original Message ----- From: " " <dhuntress@...> <Rheumatoid Arthritis > Sent: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 4:06 PM Subject: Re: Pain and swelling > Thanks, > It's just I can't tell if I'm swollen - I can only tell if I'm in > pain. Guest guest
I know when my feet are swollen because my shoes are tight. Also, I can feel the inflamation in my joints because I can feel the heat in them, and I can touch the one that is inflamed and one that is not and can feel the difference in temperature. I'm returning to the North Slope as a medic tomorrow and may be out of circulation. Going to a new place and don't know what kind of communications I will have. God Bless, Jay PS How is school going for you???? > > > > I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I have > had > > > RA > > > > for 19 years now. Guest guest
, I hardly see swelling but my rheumy said not everyone has the same symptoms. I too feel a lot of pain. Now in the morning I can see swelling of the hands and knees. My husband calls my hands baseball gloves... > > > > I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Guest guest
I don't have a choice as to who I see for a rheumy. It's whomever Tri-Care sees fit to send me too. We only have 2 in the general area and one doesn't see tri-care patients. So I have to deal with this one and make him see what's up and not stop telling him that I am still having pain and the meds on now don't make me feel well enough to function.... so far nothing from him helps. He just wants to take a few months with each step. Great, in the mean time I just get by. --- In Rheumatoid Arthritis , " nmr " <nmr.01@t...> wrote: > Personally I would say no. I can't tell either. Guest guest
Jay, I wear sandles so I don't have to slipe on shoes. So it's not as easy to see them swollen. I feel it when they are swollen. I feel this tightness and can't wiggle my toes that much. Now I see how you are so informed with medical knowledge. Guest guest
Hi Carol: I take a fluid pill daily, and it does not take away any RA swelling. The only thing that takes down the swelling for me is Prednisone. Hugs, Barbara From: carolbak555 <carolbak555@...> Subject: [ ] Pain and Swelling Date: Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 4:42 PM I have been seeing the R/A doctor for over a year. I still have major swelling in ankles and wrists. Has anyone used water pills to help? Thank Carol
Guest guest
Carol, I never tried water pills, but even prednisone doesn't take the swelling out of my hands and fingers... I can't help but wonder if its just one of those things we need to get used too... Best of luck in your search.. Bonnie > > I have been seeing the R/A doctor for over a year. Guest guest
Prednisone causes swelling and or water retention for me. I do use an over the counter water pill, diurez, twice daily. Doesn't seem to take all of the swelling or weight gain away but does help some in the hands and ankles. Is also relatively cheap. It seems that almost all of our RA, Fibro or auto immune disease meds cause some sot of retention or weight gain. Vicki Iowa
