Guest guest
Connie, et al... This article has a lot to say about statins and, yes, zetia too. The straight story from a doctor/researcher who is director of a government funded initiative. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_04/b4068052092994.htm Cheryl > > > > On Friday I went to a new doc, an endo, for hair loss. Guest guest
If I am not mistaken, Zetia prevents cholesterol from being absorbed in digestion. Back in the mid 80's, I watched a young man 21 years old get muscle breakdown from a cholesterol drug that prevents absorbtion from the stomach. This was just before statins came on the market. He was dying. Cholesterol inhibition is a crime in my book. If cholesterol is truly elevated, then ask why its elevated. Lipids are regulated thru metabolism which is governed by hormonal balance. Have you had a complete thyroid panel? If thyroid hormone is messed up, hair falling out could be one of the symptoms. A suggish thyroid would elevate cholesterol as well. Guest guest
A total cholesterol of 208 ? There is nothing wrong with that. But the medical profession wants you to think there is something wrong. Ther isn't. > > On Friday I went to a new doc, an endo, for hair loss. Guest guest
Yes, I had the thyroid panel done, but I had to ask for it. TSH was normal as were the others T3, T4, whatever was in the " thyroid panel. " Also, a derm is checking other hormones testosterone, prolactin, DHEAS, Vit D, zinc, etc. Maybe something else will show up. Thanks, Connie > > > > On Friday I went to a new doc, an endo, for hair loss. One of the > > first things he says is, your cholesterol is high. Guest guest
Connie, I do remember seeing some posts by folks complaining of hair loss while taking statins. Its not a common complaint like muscle weakness, but the complaint does exist with statins. Glad to hear your Thyroid labs are good. Those other labs are good to run as well since Statins can upset steroid hormonal balance. Bobby > > > > > > On Friday I went to a new doc, an endo, for hair loss. Guest guest
Connie, I am a 49 years old female. My Total CHOL. was 191, my HDL and LDH levels were about the same as yours, my TRIG´s were 128. My Endo put me on 20mgs of Lipitor! I bought the first box and started to take it, and after the first week began to cut the pill in half. After I finished that first box , I never bought it again. My ankles were killing me and I got this weird pain near my left elbow and forearm. It felt like my elbow bone was killing me. While I was on Lipitor I had a very itchy scalp, and had a slight rash on my upper chest. If you are on any diabetes meds that can also make your hair fall out. I take 250mgs a day of Metformin, I am not a diabetic, I just produce way to much insulin and get hypoglycemia. Guest guest
Hi Pamela, it's been about 16 months since I stopped the zocor, took 10 mg for about 6 years. I've have had fine hair all my life, lately it really started coming out as the amount of hair I have now is really noticeably sparce. I take a diurectic that is supposed to help with higher than normal androgens, but I think maybe since I'm in menopause that has alot to do with it. By the way, about 2 years ago when my TC was down to 167, my gp said I was really doing good, but I felt like crap. And, I had my pharmacy give me a printout of the drugs I get there, mostly for infections, pain, imflamation, etc and the pain meds, and anti- imflamatiories started 3 months after I started the zocor. I thought cause I was getting older, later 40's, and my job was repetitive, those were the cause of the pain. But, even after I stopped working I still had right elbow, knee and shoulder pain, and 4 rounds of ordered PT just gave me more pain. Probably cause I was still taking the zocor. I didn't make the connection until I had 4 months of post- PT bicepital tendonitis/pain that didn't go away. When I saw the ads for Lipitor that mentioned " unexplained muscle pain or weakness could be signs of a rare but serious side effect, " I thought maybe that's why it still hurts, so I looked it up on the internet. 3 days after stopping, with my gp's permission, I felt better than I had in about 4 years. I'm going to take the Zetia until I find out about my next labs, and if the cholesterol is down alot, I figure it doesn't have to be that low no matter what the doc says, I don't want to risk more pain. I do have some left elbow pain now, and I am right handed, but I have had it for about a year, don't really know the cause of it. Guest guest
Connie, did you get the numbers from your thyroid panel? I had my thyroid destroyed with radioactive iodine many years ago, and recently discovered the thyroid lists on . I asked my doctor to run free T3 and free T4. When the results came back both the free T3 and free T4 were below the normal range. The TSH was low. Most doctors that are unfamiliar with thyroid problems only look at TSH and base everything on that. This doctor said the the thyroid was " OK " and the free T3 anf free T4 were " trivial low " . I went to another doctor and he said I was probably hypothyroid. So I have increased my thyroid medication and feel better. This is why I suggest you get the numbers with the ranges for each. You may find that your thyroid numbers are not " normal " . Gene At 09:52 PM 8/10/2008, you wrote: Yes, I had the thyroid panel done, but I had to ask for it. TSH was normal as were the others T3, T4, whatever was in the " thyroid panel. " Also, a derm is checking other hormones testosterone, prolactin, DHEAS, Vit D, zinc, etc. Maybe something else will show up. Thanks, Connie
Guest guest
Connie, I agree with Gene. Its perplexing when doctors call to say results were normal when they are clearly not. Its a common occurance with thyroid. In todays world, ya gotta get the numbers for yourself and do your homework. Bobby > >Yes, I had the thyroid panel done, but I had to ask for it. Guest guest
ConnieI would just stop taking them completely - like the majority of people on this board. When you get to our ages and around the time of the menopause, it's very difficult to attribute hair loss to one particular thing. Going back to when I was 19yrs old - any stress/trauma in my life and my hair would come out. Statins assault every cell in your body - so when my hair came out after 2 yrs on Statins I think I can safely blame the Simvastatin. It's fine now after 16 weeks off the Statins - in fact it's only tinnitus/memory loss/cognitive skills/neuropathy/morning diarrehia/muscle pain/fatigue and a little Sciatica in my bum still bothering me.Nowhere near as bad as what it was - on a scale of 1-10 10 being the worst ever I'm now at a 5! Guest guest
Gene, I do have a copy of the thyroid panel lab results, they are as follows: range T-3 uptake 28 N 22-35 T-4(thyroxine) total 9.9 N 4.5-12.5 Free T-4 index (T7) 2.8 N 1.4-3.8 TSH 1.44 N 0.40-4.50 It says that all are in the normal range. Do you think any are lower or higher than they should be to cause my problems? When I went to this new endo, he looked at all the previous labs I had done and did not comment, all he said was my TC was high at 208 and I think at 134 my LDL was higher than it should be because I have type 2 diabetes and I think my docs, endo and gp say the type 2 is a risk factor and it should be lower. Any comments? Connie > >Yes, I had the thyroid panel done, but I had to ask for it. TSH was > >normal as were the others T3, T4, whatever was in the " thyroid panel. Guest guest
Connie, Your TSH is perfect. A TSH between 1.0 and 2.0 is as good as it can be according to an endo at the Univeristy of Texas. Your cholesterol of 208 is in my opinion a very healthy number, even slightly on the low side. Remember Connie, the new range of cholesterol under 200 is motivated by the drug companies to expand their market. The REAL range for cholesterol is in the 200 to 300 range. Your labs look great! " PERFECT " would be a better description. You should celebrate. Bobby Tyler, Texas > > >Yes, I had the thyroid panel done, but I had to ask for it. Guest guest
Thanks Bobby, I am seeing this endo tomorrow, and will see where my lipid panel is as of last Friday, the day I had the labs done. If I can get in with another endo closer to my house, I won't go back to him and will probably stop the Zetia on my own. He is a Hispanic man, and his practice seems to cater to his Latin population in his area, he is about 30 miles from here, too far to keep going there. He was worried about my calcium intake and gave me a nutrition sheet on the food values of calcium, most contained cheese, one was enchiladas, another was burritoes, another refried beans, you see where I am going with this. I am Pennsylvania Dutch, with a German background. These are things I would never eat. I avoid cheese because of the cholesterol. Then he wants me to take Zetia, I guess so I can add enchiladas, burritoes, and refried beans to my diet. Crazy!!!!! I am just going to take Citrical with D instead. He didn't seem to address my hair loss problem much, which is why I was referred to him in the first place. I did a check of the top causes of death in the US on the internet and as of 2005 the top cause is still heart disease and related problems. Doesn't seem as if the millions of people who take statins are reducing their chance of heart attack or strokes anyway, the Big Pharma companies are just making tons of money, that is my belief. Guest guest
Connie, Thats the first time I ever heard of a physician trying to switch a patient to a hispanic diet. I got a laugh out of it. Concerning the Zetia. If I am not mistaken, zetia prevents cholesterol from being digested. I watched a young man dying from such a drug. He was all shriveled up and looked like a holocaust victim. I will never forget this scene. Ya know, when you witness something like that, the memory of it stays forever. Anything that blocks cholesterol is an invitation for trouble because of all the wonderful things that cholesterol does for us. Your cell walls have cholesterol for structural integrety. Your body manufactures its steroid hormones from cholesterol. Cholesterol forms the bile acids used in digestion. The sun shines on a cholesterol component in the skin which then begins the process of making Vitamin D. You need vitamin d to maintain bone strength. Cholesterol forms the protective sheath around our nerves. And last but not least, cholesterol is critical in maintaining cognitive function. Most people don't hold a degree in human biology. So its very easy for marketeers to pull the wool over the eyes of the general public. But if every person had an understanding of what cholesterol is and its bodily functions, people would be more concerned with how they can INCREASE their cholesterol levels. Again, your lab numbers look great! Are you experiencing symptoms that concern you that keep you going to the doctor? Guest guest
Connie, I don't think your endo knows anything about the thyroid. I am not an expert on the thyroid, because I have only been aware of the problem for about 6 months. The key things to measure are Free T3 and Free T4. T3 is what the body uses, and it should be toward the upper limit. You said you have a hair loss problem, and that is one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. another symptom is high cholesterol. Here is a website that will give you worlds of information: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ Read as much of it as you can before you go to your doctor tomorrow. Guest guest
Gene is correct. Free T3 should be run for a complete thyroid panel. And yes, elevated cholesterol can be a symptom of low thyroid function. But Connie's cholesterol is not high at all. And the thyroid numbers she provided so far look beautiful. Unless a FT3 test shows a problem, Connie's thyroid numbers and lipid numbers are in perfect sync with each other. If my hair was falling out, the FIRST QUESTION I would address is " what drugs am I taking? " The Zetia could be to blame. Next I would check thyroid. With thyroid ruled out I would check steroid hormones. (which by the way, cholesterol lowering drugs devastate sex hormone profiles) Next I would rule out Hg toxicity. Whats for dinner? Tuna? And i would have a heavy metals panel done. > >Gene, I do have a copy of the thyroid panel lab results, they are as > >follows: > > range > >T-3 uptake 28 N 22-35 > >T-4(thyroxine) total 9.9 N 4.5-12.5 > >Free T-4 index (T7) 2.8 N 1.4-3.8 > >TSH 1.44 N 0.40-4.50 > > > >It says that all are in the normal range.
