Guest guest
I know, Bobby, it left my post making no sense. I had edited out everything from your post except the point I was commenting on; I don't know why it didn't make the transition. Here's what inspired me to comment: Most people don't hold a degree in human biology. So its very easy for marketeers to pull the wool over the eyes of the general public. But if every person had an understanding of what cholesterol is and its bodily functions, people would be more concerned with how they can INCREASE their cholesterol levels. To which I replied: Bobby, that sounds like an indictment of the entire medical profession! Surely not?! Or...could it possibly be true?! So where does that leave us poor patients?! Oh, no, say it isn't so!flyinresorts <flyinresorts@...> wrote: , My post didn't appear below your question, so I am not sure which post I made that you are referring to below.Bobby > ...Most people don't hold a degree in human biology. Guest guest
I did not intend for my statement to indict the entire medical community. After all, a doctor saved my life when I had thyroid cancer, and saved my friend when he had a brain tumor. I have several physician friends whom I care for and respect. Its the cholesterol lowering sector of medicine I have no respect for. Even my Pathologist friend is disgusted by the cholesterol fraud. The statement you quoted from me I beleive to be 100% correct. So to answer your question , yes, its that way. But its not meant to condemn the entire medical community. YES. The majority of the population does not hold a degree in human biology. Thats 100% true. YES. Only a Tiny fraction of people are aware of what cholesterol is and what its functions are in the human body. I made a fun game out of this at work by creating a " CAN YOU GUESS WHAT IT IS? " game. I then listed the bodily functions of cholesterol.( But without saying the name cholesterol.) Most people guess water. Some guess oxygen. Only one person was able to get the answer. But thats because he was a nuclear pharmacist. A table full of nurses had no clue. YES. Marketeers can be slick as a snake in an oil pan. They play on people's beleif that cholesterol is there for the purpose of clogging our arteries and killing people. They use fear of death to fuel sales, and they entertain your doctor until he prescribes the drug. YES. Its true that if the general population had a clear understanding of all the good cholesterol does, ( and understood that elevated cholesterol has never been proven to cause heart disease.) They would have no desire to lower cholesterol. Bobby > > ...Most people don't hold a degree in human biology. Guest guest
Bobby, I don't believe I ever addressed your question about why I keep visiting the doctor. I see my gp every 4 months due to type 2 diabetes, most likely due to heredity, I've been told. My father developed type 2 in his early 40's, about the same age I did. Since I had that in my family history, my gynecologist started checking me for diabetes during my yearly check-ups. My mother also had cholesterol over 300. When my sugar started going up, I was told to follow up with my gp, who recommended diet and exercise. I lost 10 lbs. and was down to 145 lbs., but that made no differance in the sugar levels. He also said diabetics are more prone to heart disease and he started checking my cholesterol levels. When my TC crept up over 200, he prescribed 10 mg of Zocor. I started in Dec. of 2001, and within 3 months, I developed tennis elbow and knee pains. The muscle pains started as a result of physical therapy for the tennis elbow, which was from a repititous job I was told. I quit the job, no relief of pain. The weight-lifting and resistance bands during the last round of P/T in fall of 2006 caused biciptal tendonitis (the physical therapist diagnosed this.) The P/T was toned down, but the biceps pain continued for 4 months. I had been prescribed anti- imflammatories, muscle relaxers, anti-depressants, darvocet for daytime and percocet for nightime pain, these all started 3 months after begining the Zocor. I felt like a walking pharmacy. I have also had at least 8 cortisone injections in numerous painful joints, which x-rays showed mild arthritis. When I got jury duty last March, I felt I could not serve due to all the drugs I was taking, I was also developing brainfog and insominia. I went to my gp and asked if the on-going pain could be from the Zocor. I started listening to the Lipitor commercials that warned of " unexplained muscle pain or weakness, that could be the sign of a serious side effect and to talk to your doctor. " At this point my TC was down to 167, good my gp told me. CPK levels were normal, although I was diagnosed with myositis (muscle imflammation.) I wonder how that happened! When he said to stop the Zocor, the 4 months of arm pain went away. Then my mind started to clear and I started sleeping longer than 2 hours at a time. I was feeling better than I had in years. A month later my TC went up to 232, so pg prescribes 5 mg of Crestor. I took one tablet and developed wide-spread muscle pain, and couldn't sleep all night due to the pain, that's when I was given cymbalta and percocet, cause I called the doctor's office crying in pain. Sorry this is so involved, but these symptoms didn't even occur to me to be statin-related until I found this and numerous sites and articles about the " great cholesterol myth and Big Pharma con game. " Who would think that going to your doctor would make your feel worse! I am starting to wonder if taking diabetes oral medications can cause your pancreas to burn it self out. I already have had to stop taking Avandia due to painful edema. I took that for about 5 years and started to worry about the heart concerns. I have lost 18 lbs. since stopping Avandia, which was probably fluid. Pains I still had in my thighs have disappeared now. I was sent to this endo by my gp due to worsening hairloss. He was more worried about my 208 TC and elevated blood glucose due to stopping the Avandia. Many of the doctor visits in the past were due to these chronic pain conditions caused by statin-induce muscle damage. I am now suffering from gallstones, and benign liver nodules. I wonder if these conditions are caused by taking all these drugs. Guest guest
Connie, some of the symptoms you describe sound like you may be hypothyroid. Go to this website: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ and read it. Many doctors do not understand the importance of the thyroid and leave their patients underprescribed. Guest guest
Gene, I have an appointment with another endo closer to my home next Friday. I had originally called this one in July and Oct. 10 was the first opening, that's why I asked my gp for another endo's name cause I didn't want to wait that long to have some tests done. I hope she looks at the labs I have already had done and decides there are some that weren't done that should have been, like the Free T3 you andd Bobby suggested and was not done for me. Oh, what is Hg toxicity? I don't know what the Hg means. Connie > >Bobby, I don't believe I ever addressed your question about why I > >keep visiting the doctor. Guest guest
Hi, Connie, I can't explain this but endos don't seem to be the ones that can solve thyroid problems. Here is a website that can give you some information: http://www.thyroid-info.com/topdrs/index.htm and here is a Group that is about thyroid problems: NaturalThyroidHormones/ There are also local thyroid groups in some areas, and they can give you good local information. That is how I found my current doctor who is also hypothyroid and therefore understands the problems. You need to find a doctor that will listen to you and understand your symptoms, and not just go on the TSH number. The tests you need are Free T3 and Free T4. You will want to use Armour Thyroid and have your T3 near the upper limit of the range. My T3 is above the maximum and I am feeling better than I have in years. It is not easy to find a good doctor that understands the thyroid, but when you do, it is really good. Good luck, Gene At 03:49 PM 9/30/2008, you wrote: Gene, I have an appointment with another endo closer to my home next Friday. Guest guest
Hg is mercury. We ALL have a certain amount of mercury in our bodies. It occurs naturally in the environment. Hg toxicity usually occurs from over consumption of certain fishes, such as Tuna and other varieties. A simple blood test can confirm if your levels are too high. Guest guest
Very well could be hypoythyroidism. Remember, lipid metabolism is governed via thyroid hormone. If thyroid hormone is low, then cholesterol will increase. There are no less than 150 different symptoms of low thyroid since evrey cell in your body uses thryroid hormone. Hypothyroidism has ben called the great imitator of all diseases. Once females are in midlife, its important to keep a close eye on this. By the time females pass 65 years old. 16% are hypothyroid. Bobbyhttp://geocities.com/flyinresorts/blog.html Bobby, I don't believe I ever addressed your question about why I keep visiting the doctor. I had been prescribed anti-imflammatories, muscle relaxers, anti-depressants, darvocet for daytime and percocet for nightime pain, these all started 3 months after begining the Zocor. I started listening to the Lipitor commercials that warned of "unexplained muscle pain or weakness, that could be the sign of a serious side effect and to talk to your doctor." At this point my TC was down to 167, good my gp told me. CPK levels were normal, although I was diagnosed with myositis (muscle imflammation. )I wonder how that happened! Sorry this is so involved, but these symptoms didn't even occur to me to be statin-related until I found this and numerous sites and articles about the "great cholesterol myth and Big Pharma con game." Who would think that going to your doctor would make your feel worse!I am starting to wonder if taking diabetes oral medications can cause your pancreas to burn it self out. I wonder if these conditions are caused by taking all these drugs.Connie
Guest guest
Gene is correct. You can't go on TSH alone. Need Ft4 and Ft3. I asked an endo at the University of Texas what the ideal TSH is. She replied " Between 1.0 and 2.0 " WE are all different. I take armour thyroid and do better than on Synthroid. My niece must take armour because T4 alone does not work for her. On the other side of the coin I know people who do great on Synthroid alone. I also know people who found their perfect balance with Synthroid + 5 mcg Cytomel. And I know people who can't tolerate armour. I guess we are all different and need to do what works best in each individual case. Guest guest
Thanks, Gene and everyone for your replies. The only problem I have now is that I have an HMO through Aetna and I am having trouble finding endos that take Aetna. I think they have a bad reputation as far as I can tell, I guess they don't pay practioners timely, not sure there. I know that everytime I need x-rays, ultrasounds or mammograms, I can't go to my local hospital as their radiology dept. won't accept Aetna HMO's. I need to go 10 miles further away. Hopefully, this new endo will listen and if I ask her if I should have the Free T3 test done she won't say, " where did you find out about that, the Internet? " Many docs I have gone to make faces when I tell them things I read on the Internet. If she doesn't want to help further, then I am about ready to give up. I have been taking the 10 mg of Zetia for over 2 months and have developed left elbow joint pain, I am right handed so I am not overusing it. Also, left knee pain has recurred and stiff and achy neck, some upper arm soreness, too. My docs usually say, " remember, now, you are 54 so you can expect this with aging. " I am going to take it until my next labs next Wednesday to see what the results are and then stop the Zetia to see if the aches and pains go away. Can anyone explain how Zetia works or point me to a good article on how Zetia works and the side effects? The other endo said that Zetia shouldn't cause me the previous muscle problems since it works in the absorption through the intestines not the liver. I read somewhere that there is an increase risk of cancer because Zetia blocks absorption of plant sterols. I though I read that plant sterols protect you from cancer. Guest guest
Zetia(Ezetimibe) is mixed with Zocor (Simvastatin) in a drug called vytorin which has failed in recent testing. This combination actually increased plaque build up over time. Zetia has never been tested for cardiovascular benefit, only that it lowers cholesterol. Cholesterol lowering is called a surrogate endpoint with the assumption that anything that lowers cholesterol must be good. This assumption is being rethought due to recent testing results on vytorin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vytorin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zetia I personally tried Zetia in the past before the above results and both times it cut my total/HDL ratio down and lowered my HDL 10-15 points, and unacceptable result. Given the recent study above, I would not agree to take the drug at this time. Steve cls54721 wrote: > > > Thanks, Gene and everyone for your replies.
