Perhaps the same reason wolves howl when they hear other wolves? Perhaps they were getting upset by the noise?

Screaming kids

I may have found someone who doesn't mind screaming kids: other little kids. Tonight I was out doing some shopping. Around me was a family with several very young children who were well behaved. Somewhere else in the store, a kid started screaming. By the third scream, the youngest of the family's kids started screaming every time the other kid screamed. Another scream or two and the other kid screamed too. By that time I had already vacated the area so I don't really know how long that went on, since I had checked out and was leaving.

It would be interesting to find out why kids do that.

My theory of why little kids screaming is so annoying to

adults...

Kids that screamed at a pitch that resonate with the adult ears and

nervous systems attract the attention of care givers more quickly and

therefore tend to survive longer and have a better chance to reproduce...

On kids screaming when they hear other kids scream...

Screaming kid means kid in trouble... once upon a time if a nearby kid

was in trouble all the kids in the area were likely to be in the same

trouble... So echoing the screams of other kids would tend to attract

more care givers and there by be more likely to survive...

There was a commerical not long ago that had a woman in the grocery with her little son. He wanted something and she said no. He started to throw a tantrum when the mother let out a scream and threw a tantrum probably just like he normally did. She jumped around, fell on the ground kicking and rolling and screaming then stood up again. The boy put the thing back on the shelf. They must not have told the boy what was going to happen because of his expression. There is no way that he could have faked or "acted" THAT shocked and horrified all in one expression.

ender,

Good theory on both counts. There was a story about while about some naturalist who liked living amongst grizzly bears and even said he wouldn't mind being eaten by one. well, that finally happened and I guess he didn't like it too much. His girlfriend was not touched, however, her post attack screams were heard on tape and those screams brought the bear back and it attacked and killed her. Predators are drawn to the distress cries of animals because it means they will have an easier meal, an already injured or distressed animal, than a healthy one. Kind of a double-edged sword there.

This is true. My mother said "look at all these people looking at you" when I had a tantrum once. I actually did look around and saw how they were looking at me. That was enough and I never did it again.

I've seen that commercial - I found it hillarous - I used to do

something similar with kids myself - if they screamed I would scream

back, but louder - used to shut them up and the look of surprise on

their faces that an adult would scream back was priceless - the

element of surprise :-)

Some other tactics that have worked on my son's tantrums - not giving

into the tantrum (obviously) and another one I just calmly waited

until he paused and asked him calmly if he had finished. Another time

I just walked off (done that one a few times actually) often it is

just an attention seeking ploy and I will not reward bad behaviour

with attention - there are other ways to get attention he has learnt -

but I only do the walking off one if it is safe.

Do you all think I am a cold hearted evil mother yet? I'm not btw :-)

That's great! Too bad people are too embarrassed to actually do

something like that. They're also afraid social services will take

their child away if they dare do anything.
