Guest guest
Merrill Goozner has written an analysis of the JUPITER trial. http://www.gooznews.com/archives/001243.html Most of the media reports of this trial failed to note the significant increase in development of diabetes in the Crestor group. Mr. Goozner's article explains the statistics in an understandable way. he notes that " ... for every person who didn't get a serious cardiovascular event, three-quarters of a person got diabetes. " He also reiterates the " number Needed To Treat " from the editorial in the NEJM http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/NEJMe0808320 For 1 person to avoid a cardiovascular event over 1.9 years, 120 people must take Crestor. One must feel very lucky indeed to think one will be that person out of 120 over 1.9 years who will benefit and not develop diabetes. Media report of the JUPITER trail (notes a " small increase in diabetes " - -as though it was insignificant-- http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5jOGplzboTpFg0hit4DCZZXpflTyQ
