Guest guest
Hello! My husband is really worried about me starting kombucha while I'm in my 2nd trimester. But I have a liver condition called cholestasis that popped up during my first pregnancy (it goes away after you have the baby) and I'm desperately trying to avoid it for this pregnancy. I'd like to take kombucha because I believe it will help my liver to function properly, but everyone tells me it is unsafe to detox during pregnancy. Can anyone help me out here? Is it safe or should I avoid it? Thanks!!!
Guest guest
Hi Ed, How about kt and low thyroid? What are your thoughts? Thanks for all your helpful info. Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile Re:Kombucha + pregnancy , There are several Kombucha books that warn not to drink Kombucha in liver disorders. Two examples are Hobbs (a fellow herbalist & acupuncturist in Santa Cruz, CA) and Beth Petro. I have not found any books, that go into detail as to why. Although there have been many good reports in folk lore, IMO, it is best to err on the side of caution. IMHO, in your condition specifically, kombucha may be too much of a good thing. One reason why it may be OK for some and not for others is that it really depends upon the strain of bacteria/yeasts that are in one's kombucha tea. (or any live, raw probiotic, like kefir.) There are literally hundreds of different strains. Each strain has a different potential to colonize the intestinal tract and therefore affects bile tolerance and stimulates digestive juices differently. Since there is a huge hormonal change taking place at the same time it is impossible to determine benefit. .. ... but we know there are consequences. There are alternative health therapies and a local herbalist may help. Herbs that may help; Dandelion Root and Milk Thistle. Do not use; Antihistamines, Aveeno and Oatmeal Bath should NOT be used. There are many other reasons why I do not recommend kombucha at certain times that are posted on my web site.
