I use the fFreezer ones as they are thicker. Then I seal that bag and enclose it in a vacuum sealer bag. This package goes in a USPS (if you are in the US) priority shipping box (VCR tape size) that is free at the post office. I fill any remaining room in the box with packing peanusts that I have saved over the years and recycle in this way. I tape the closure with clear packing tape, just to be sure there are no accidents. I explained this to the postal clerk when she asksd if there is liquid in the package and she has been completely satisfied with this method. I have shipped from Wisconsin out to Colorado and also shipped from Wisconsin to Delaware with no problems. However the further destinations do add postage. The most a package has cost me to mail was just under eight dollars US. In a nearer zone, closer to five dollars, depending on thickness of the SCOBY. Hope this helps... Guest guest
Hi nne. I have mailed several scobies. I put the scoby in a gallon size freezer ziplock bag with at least one cup of brew. I then try to press out as much air as I can while zipping the bag shut. Then I put that bag inside another freezer ziplock bag and close it the same way, trying to get as much air as possible out. I then using packing tape and tape the outer bag closed at the top to help prevent leakage. I don't vacuum seal it like Gayle does, although that is an excellent idea and I will probably start doing that as well. I use the video-tape size USPS priority mail boxes for mailing as well. I usually put directions in with my scobies. There isn't normally a lot of room left in the box as I tend to grow big scobies. I think I've mailed off half a dozen scobies to all corners of the US and so far, no one has e-mailed me about any problems they've encountered. I did have one friend say she couldn't believe the USPS let something like that in the mail! Guest guest
Please ignore my last comment about mailing liquid!... Has anyone ever mailed one in a bubble mailer - or would that not be enough protection?\\ www.time-to-heal.blogspot.com Best way to mail a scooby > Hello, Can someone experienced with mailing scoobies tell me the best > way to do it? > > Thanks, > nne > nne....I enclose the SCOBY and 2 cups of acidic KT ins a quart size ziplock type bag. Guest guest
Too late!! Gayle Re: Best way to mail a scooby > Please ignore my last comment about mailing liquid!... Guest guest
I'm glad to know that Gayle, since I wasn't sure why they were asking. It's hard to know anymore what you can do and can't do without filing for a permit. Guest guest
Just within UK. I pop it in a bag, expel as much air as poss, knot the neck, re-bag and re-knot. Then it goes in a " Jiffy-bag " which I guess is probably a rough translation of " bubble mailer " . I've only sent about 1/2doz. but no problems. Nn. England. So I was at the post office tonight mailing out some water kefir grains and took the time to ask about mailing liquids. (I guess in our little town they sometimes let things slip through....they did that for me before when I described how I package) Here's the deal. If you tell them there is liquid, you can still ship the package, same price. Difference is they officially CANNOT PUT IT ON A PLANE! They are supposed to mark it LIQUID on the box. It is supposed to go into a separate tote and goes ground. They also said one should include enough absorbant packing material to absorb all the liquid should there be leakage....now I gotta tell ya it would take a lot of absorbancy to contain two cups of KT! Now...next time I go in I will need to ask a few more questions....like how long does it sit there? Would it go by ground anyway to the destination on the package? I guess the answer for me might be to mail them out without liquid. I'm quite confident the SCOBY would survive...the recipient would just need to use distilled or pasteurized vinegar to get the first brew going. Anyway...that is the OFFICIAL story. Do not ask me how the commercial shippers get theirs through the system. So...that's the info...do with it as you will! Happy Shipping!!!!
