Welcome to the club, but I'm sorry you have reason to be here. I hope you are seeing a rheumatologist, and if not, you should be. I've got a couple of links that give general information about RA, the first one is on the disease http://www.arthritisinsight.com/medical/disease/ra/ra.html and the second one on on the medications often used for the disease. http://www.arthritisinsight.com/medical/disease/ra/ra.html

Plaquenil is one of the milder DMARDs and Medrol (I think) is a form of Prednisone that helps symptoms but does not slow or stop permanent joint damage. Please read about the different medications and their advantages and disadvantages. All have some adverse side effects, some worse than others. However, the effects of untreated RA are very negative so some side effects are much more desireable than untreated RA.

In my opinion the fatigue is not really a part of RA although many people with RA have fatigue. I think that RA is one auto-immune disease and anyone with RA is likely to have one or more additional auto-immune diseases. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome often goes along with RA. There are medications that help with CFS but I don't have it so I don't keep track of what they are.

Good luck, God bless, and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Subject: Newly Diagnosed

Hello, I was recently diagnosed (last week) but have been suffering for 2 years with Rheumatoid Arthritis and have no idea of the prognosis. I got started with plaquenil and medrol a couple of days ago. Can somebody please guide me on anything I can do to feel better? my main problem is the fatigue and soreness. I would also wan to know if there's any special diet that would make me feel better. Any help is really appreciated. Thank you very much!Regards,

Thank you Harold for your kind input. I'll make sure to check those

websites and learn from them. Do you know of any special diet that

may improve the sympthoms? oh, and I'm already seeing a

rheumatologist, thank you.

The effect of diet on RA is a highly controversial subject. Some say that no more than 5% of people with RA are improved by diet changes, and others claim that almost all people with RA can benefit from diet changes. DrWeill.com has a lot of information about diet in general, some of which relates to RA. I also copied some links from a strong diet advocate who posts on another board and some of them may be of interest to you. I think his links overstate the case for diet, just as many others understate the case for diets.

"Good websites to learn from:http://www.arthritistrust.org/ - Several of the things I'm doing are based on the research/protocol recommended herehttp://www.WESTONAPRICE.ORG - A lot of research-based nutrition informationhttp://homepages.paradise.net.nz/rwgully/ - compares a lot of the different diets/ways of eating out there today. Also contains the e-diet I used and metabolic diet I'm following nowhttp://www.usprobiotics.org/index.htm - general information about probioticshttp://jhackett_ra.tripod.com/ - Describes my story along with details/background of the type of approach I have used"

"Joe’s Story - http://arthritisinsight.com/living/diet/joe.html

"Leaky Gut - http://arthritisinsight.com/living/diet/leakygut.html "

I personally use what I feel is a healthy diet and traditional western medicine to control my RA. I use Methotrexate (15 mg/week) and Remicade (6 mg/kg every 6 weeks) to keep my RA under pretty good control.

Good luck and God bless.
