Hi

Rossin has done extensive testing of Kombucha. At

kombucha tea/files/Kombucha%20Threads/\

Kombucha%20Threads/

,under Plastics the he states, " Well, we've looked at Kombucha in pop

bottles, Kombucha in Tupperware, Kombucha in " food grade plastic

fermenting containers, and Kombucha in plastic in general. So far,

it's a personal choice, glass or plastic does not effect the ferment,

and does not provide petrochemicals in solution. That's both ferment

and storage. "

V one of the past monitors had concerns about plastic and stated

" The issue with plastics is not so much petrochemicals, but estrogen

mimickers. I doubt very much that is what Roussin looked for, and

when I have asked him to clarify, I have heard no word. I do not

think these statements should be taken as assurance that plastics are safe. "

To learn more about estrogen mimickers see

http://www.anapsid.org/cnd/hormones/index.html

I had not heard of estrogen mimickers until V brought them to my

attention. I've done some studding on them but have a lot more to do

until I'm comfortable on the issue. I can say that some practices

like heating thing in baggies in the microwave are a thing of the past with me.

As far as markings go if you purchase a container from your local

beer/wine making store it will be food safe.

Hi ,

I use a plastic food grade container all the time as i have MS

and glass is too heavy and dangerous for me. I have never had a problem with the

brewing or the finished KT and i store my finished KT in plastic 2 litre spring

water bottles. I bought my container from a homebrew shop so i know its food

grade and safe. Mine too has a spigot on it-so much easier than lifting eh!

Im in the UK btw.

Let me know how you go on if you decide to use plastic.

Best wishes
