Guest guest
...interestingly enough this was just addressed in another message yesterday. You can certainly keep it in pyrex. Just top with finished KT and cover the way you do when you brew. In addition to that cover you can also partially cover with plastic wrap to slow down evaporation. Do not put it in the refrigerator...this causes the microflora to go a bit comatose and you will have trouble getting them to wake up again when you start your next brew. Some wake up sooner than others and you may find your brews will not be as balanced as you would like, ie your fizziness factor or fermenting time may change until they all get back on their feet. As long as you have eonough KT covering the SCOBY it will be fine. In fact it will start forming another SCOBY as it sits waiting for you to start another brew. Just remember to reserve enough finished KT so that you have adequate starter liquid for the next brew. Gayle Keeping Scoby in Pyrex > Help! Guest guest
I just found out (through this group) that you should store your scoby in glass, in a dark place (NOT the fridge-I killed mine that way). Scobies need air but not mold and fruit flies, so covering it with many layered cheese cloth or a linen or cotton towel is good. More experienced brewers can give more detail. I just picked up another from Jan (many thanks, Jan!!) and will be treating it much differently than my first. Plus I will be giving my newer scobies to many of my friends who stored their scobies in the fridge and will soon find out they killed them! wrote: > > Help!
