Logan had torticollis in the beginning, but through pt his was resolved before the cast went on. I think in some places the shoulder straps are dependent on if the curve is high? I think? Logan's cast never had shoulder straps. So im not sure how PT would work around that...=/ Logan's mama From: rachelmjacobs <rachelmjacobs@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 8:09 PM Subject: Torticollis and PIS?

Does anyone here have a child that has torticollis and PIS? Ella is getting her first cast on in 2 weeks and I'm wondering how the shoulder straps are going to impact her physical therapy for the torticollis.

If anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

Addyson had both. We did physical therapy but very limited depending on the straps. We have had som lower straps then some very high ones that ended up having to be cut and reapplied.DMy daughter screamed and cried so after a few months we stopped going. We would check in during cast off week. We did exercises at home as much as possible. She still has a tilt at 21 months, but it's slight and has seemed to improved as the curve has gotten better. Don't know if they are related in anyway. Good luckSent from my iPadOn Feb 18, 2012, at 8:09 PM, "rachelmjacobs" <rachelmjacobs@...> wrote:

Eden also had torticollis as a baby. It went away in time (she also

had PT). She wasn’t casted til 29 months, so it wasn’t an issue

for us.

I haven't been on in quite some time, but just saw this message first. Avery had torticollis when she got her first cast and was in PT at the time. Avery didn't have shoulder straps though. We did find that her torticollis improved greatly with having her cast on. It isn't even noticeable anymore. Her PT was stopped 2 months after getting her cast. Thank you for sharing! I'm hopeful that by having her cast on it will improve

the torticollis, so it was nice to hear that was what happened with your little

one.

Did the PT seem to bother him? You said it resolved before the cast was on, but

I'm assuming the curve was there or developing? Only reason I ask if b/c the PT

seems to really bother Ella. I keep wondering if stretching her neck is hurting

her spine.

He didnt like the PT. We were able to do a lot more at home with him with the stretches. With that, his torticollis wasnt a very severe case. But I think you are right. I think some of the "torking" that was done, seemed to make him really uncomfortable. His torticollis had resolved by 9 months old when we started casting. His curve progressed from 30 to 45. What we did do since he was still really small and not crawling yet, we took EVERYTHING away that had him sitting or bouncing or in a standing position. Everything. No walkers, no johnny hopper, no bumbo seat. We fed him in a bouncy seat so it was reclined. I didnt want anything that had gravitational pressure applied more than neccessary. And we constantly did tummy time. I think that helped his neck a lot too. But by the time we started casting his curve

regressed a little. yay! Logan learned to crawl all over again and walk in the cast. Logan's mom From: rachelmjacobs <rachelmjacobs@...> infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 9:57 PM Subject:

My also has torticollis and had PT. Ella may not like the PT because they are trying to stretch the tight muscles on the side of her neck that are causing her head to tilt. That, and who of us really likes PT? I've had it for my back several times and my foot when I broke it and it bothered me. Why shouldn't being manipulated, stretched, etc. bother our kids?

Her therapist should be able to work around Bella's cast. PT's are awesome like that.

I will forever be grateful to 's PT as she discovered the scoliosis during a session.

Properly applied shoulder straps should not effect PT in any way. They should be very low, close the shoulders and not in the way at all. Please mention this to your ET doc and it should work out fine.No worries.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of rachelmjacobsSent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 6:10 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Torticollis and PIS? Exactly right.  If the apex of the most prevalent curve is above T-/8/9 the child will benefit most from an over the shoulder cast.  If the curve is below T-8/9 than an under arm cast should work fine because the curve is low and doesn’t need the stability/support of the shoulder straps.  HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of MedlinSent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 7:01 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: Torticollis and PIS? Really? Well that's a relief. When I had mentioned her PT for the torticollis

they (nurse at Cincy) said the shoulder straps might get in the way, that's why

I was concerned. Ella's just so small. I look at her and try to envision the

cast on her little body...I know I may be jumping ahead of myself worrying. I

just don't want to begin solving one issue, only to worsen another one! I'll

definately remind her doctor about the torticollis and the PT before the cast is

applied. Thank you!
