Guest guest
Hi, I am new to the list. I would like to ask how much DTT/ABA is adequate? My son is 6 years old. A psychologist recommended 10 hours a week. We have an IEP meeting on Tuesday and I was hoping that I can get some input. Also, reference materials sites or recommendations. If anyone is receiving funding from their school district, what approach did you use to get the programming? What did you use as documentation to convince them to provide the appropriate hours? Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. emcommunic@...

Your child should be learning and engaged from the time he wakes up until he falls asleep, just like any kid. You mention an IEP so his educational services should be filling between 30-35 hours of his days. Making sure he has the kind of well trained staff to support him for success at school needs to be an important priority for you. His home ABA program may be your next priority. My son is 10 YO and still has 26 hours per week after school and on weekends. His language skills are not good enough for him to participate in typical kid community recreation activities so I think this level of intense instruction is warranted. In a few years, I hope he will be able to enjoy participating in teen appropriate community activities although I'm sure he will still need support. I don't think your question can be answered in a generic way.
