Guest guest
Help! My 8 year old adopted daughter is apraxic. She suffered from severe ear infections, could only utter 2 or 3 words at the age of 18 months and could not drink from a straw. She has had numerous ear surgeries and has come so far to date that we are amazed at her progress. Now in third grade, she is doing well in spelling, math, language arts, science, etc. However, she is having great difficulty in reading -- especially reading comprehension, both comprehending what is read aloud and what is read independently. She also then has problems with retelling a story in logical sequence. At home if we go over and over the book, she is able to test at school and usually passes the test. (Accelerated Reader books). But we have to read it over and over together for her to be able to pass the testing. At the last teacher's conference, it was recommended to us that we consider AD/HD medication (she tested positive [although borderline] for AD/HD this past summer. She too has problems focusing in class and is easily distracted and then gets off task. While the majority of the class can finish an assignment on time, she is severely behind and has to take the assignment home to finish because she tends to look around the classroom and busy herself with other than the assignment in front of her. She does not get out of her seat. She does erase profusely and thus loses time. She is somewhat obsessive compulsive especially about her cursive handwriting which is beautiful for her age. Our speech therapist is not convinced that medication will help and says that if she was having problems in all subjects that the meds may be of assistance. Our SPT believes that this is a language based problem systematic of apraxia and in our daughter's case also oxygen deprivation at birth. We are in doubt about the medication for AD/HD as a helpful tool here. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks! P.S. Our family doctor also is not convinced that meds will help but is willing, if we are, to try it.
