Guest guest
I know it has been way to long since you all have heard from me, but the trouble from last year has come right on back the same children that has caused such misery has returned to their nasty ways and in my oppion the vice principle has showed some bias ways also.It hurts to see a grown man choose to pin my child as a trouble maker. All is doing is showing the kids he won't take their crap. I've taught all 5 of my sons that this world is made up of nice and not so nice and 99% people pick on people cause they don't feel good about themselves. I also told them I know its hard to turn and walk away, but what is a child to do when he knows that an adult doesn't believe anything??? Guest guest
Sue, Is this your first post?? Welcome to this awesome place. Cutting pred from 10mg to 5mg -- YIKES. You will hear many opinions from everyone here, but one thing I think we all agree on is that once you are getting below 10mg, the taper must be MUCH slower. You (the rheumy) have made a 50% cut in her dose. I think you should call her rheumy right away and talk about the taper and maybe start reducing by 1mg per week (10mg to 9mg) or maybe by 2.5mg (10mg to 7.5mg) for a couple weeks, then go by 1mg per week once you hit 5mg. You say that has been dealing with this since Nov, so I assume she's been on pred. for about 6 months now?? Probably at the 30mg - 35mg level for a while??? Tell us more specifically and you'll get more advice from others. I can tell you our story briefly for comparison with the pred and MTX. My son was 7 and started on pred last Sept and it quickly increased to 35mg. He was on 35 mg for about 3 1/2 months and we started to taper. At first dropping by 5mg every few weeks (about and 8% dosage drop) til we got down to about 15mg, then it's been dropping by 2.5mg til we got to 5mg which is where we are today. I am now supposed to start dropping 1 mg every couple to few weeks. He started on oral MTX, then injectible into juice, then the injections started in early Feb. The injections have worked wonders. I hope this helps and call your rheumy! Stacia and Hunter,8,systemic,iritis > I joined this group about 2 weeks ago after finding it while > searching for info on JRA on the internet. Guest guest
Sue, Stacia, is right, that IS a big drop. My son, was put on 10mg of prednisone back in January ( along with MTX) his dose was 5mg 2x a day. We 1st started off tapering down the PM dose which we finally did. We just started on the AM dose and just taking 1mg away ( going from 5mg to 4mg) was too much and has had increased pain in his knees. The plan was to go down 1mg every 2 weeks, but the rheumy has now amended that to 1/2mg every month. its going to take the rest of the year to get Nick off the prednisone ( The doctor also increased his MTX from 10mg to 15mg so i hope that starts to help soon. I would talk to your rheumy about such a large drop if things dont start to settle down soon. Guest guest
Hi Sue... Welcome to this group... My daughter is 2 and is on 30 mg/day of prednisone. We tried to taper her last month by administering the whole dosage in the morning versus splitting it into 2 daily dosages. After one day her joints were so swollen and she couldn't move until well into the late morning... We then upped her dosage slightly and will try the taper again next week after we see her rheumy... My daughter has been struggling since November and has finally received a diagnosis of JRA as well as Fibromyalgia. She just turned 11 last month and is in the fifth grade. She has pretty much missed school since the beginning of February and had arthroscopic surgery on both her knees to rule out any repairable cause of her knee pain as well as to do a biopsy. She has knee, ankle, wrist, toe and finger pain. Friday I gave her the first MTX injection. She is also on prednisone, piroxicam and folic acid. The rheumy had me cut her prednisone from 10 to 5 mg. a day on Saturday. She is to take the 5mg. for a week then go down by one mg. a week until she is off. Today was the second day of only 5 mg and she had a terrible day. Her pain has increased and one knee is considerably swollen. I'm wondering if this is a common reaction to the reduction in prednisone? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel as far as school absences? She is in a school for gifted children and so far we have been able to keep up with her work from home. She changes classes six times a day and has to walk pretty far to get from class to class which causes her quite a bit of pain. Any hints that anyone has for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
