Guest guest
" I have found several posts about kids having bloody stools " Trust your instinct, mom. If you think there is blood (smells like blood, looks like blood, child is in pain, eating/toileting habits have changed, etc.) then there may very well be blood. I would suggest asking her GI doc for a " kit " to check for " cells " (white AND red) when you think there is a problem. You can even ask your general peds doc for a requisition order (to give to the lab) so that you can deliver fresh samples when you think there may be blood. You also need a test kit and sterile containers to catch the poop. It is a hassle to get everything set up in advance, and docs may look at you cross-eyed, but it is so worth the time. This way, you can catch things as they are happening and sleep well knowing that you did the tests the right way. Read the kit instructions so that you don't ruin the sample (e.g., if a fixative is needed, selecting the part of the stool that are questionable as well as other locations, etc.). Personally, I would not rely on one of those cheap hemoccult tests with the paper (is this what was used?). Olivia is 9, and this has been happening off and on maybe 6 months. to backtrack, Olivia was dx with asthma january 05, started pred and flonase, gained over 20 pounds in 2 months from it, (systemic reaction), went thru two endos trying to figure it out, she became hypercalcemic, finally, she has started to lose the weight(2 lbs) and grown an inch, and her calcium levels are dropping too. So, whatever the heck happened seems to be taking care of itself. So awhile ago, she started having blood with the stools, and now we have done a hemoccult, and that was negative. but I see it, so how can that be? valarie This forum is open to parents and caregivers of children diagnosed with a Primary Immune Deficiency. Guest guest
yes, actually, it was a little paper card, and let me tell you, with a 9 and half yr old, the most disgusting thing I have ever done.(and we did 2 24 hr urine collections this summer FUN) Though, I am sure there will be something to top even that at some point. (I have a VERY sensitive nose, which is a very bad bad thing LOL) Dr said, we could do a colonoscopy........it doesnt seem, sorry for the graphics here, that there is actually blood IN the actual stool, but more of a before and after thing. As in, the toilet water looks like red food coloring has been dumped in, and there is blood on the toilet paper. She has been having a lot of tummy aches, and says sometimes there is a little relief after she goes to the bathroom....which, I think some of the drs translate as " just poop pain " , but I dont see that. She never used to complain, and now it seems to go along with the blood. with so much going on with savannah being in the hospital and such, her endoscopy, all the kids seeing the ID guy and all the labs, for boththem and myself, I have been putting it off. I KNOW it wont go away, but I WANT it to go away, you know? I WANT it to just be constipation or something easy. Ok, maybe easy is the wrong word to use with constipation!!LOL I am just wondering if it could be related to the other stuff she went thru this summer.......or something entirely new. Has this happened to your child? what did it end up being? Thanks, I know its not a pretty subject. valarie
