Guest guest
I have written about my daughter. She has been diagnosed with OCD. 6 weeks ago, she was put on 5 mg of prozac, but I hadn't seen much improvement, and the doctor has just increased it to 10 mg. She's 8 years old. I'm just worried about side affects etc. Do you think that's too much for her age? I'm new at all this, and I'm just wondering what mg anyone elses kid is on, or was on at that age for OCD? Thanks, Connie
Guest guest
Like the others, I think that the dose that your child is on is small and most likely the doc is trying to increase slowly. You will see an improvement. Just give it time. I am an adult with OCD and I am on 40 of Prozac. This is a very low dose for OCDers. I am able to talk myself thru a lot of my issues and the Prozac takes care of the rest. I will say that as far as side effects go, prozac is one of the best. There are not as many side effects and they are usually mild or never show up. The only thing that has truly bothered me is the fact that the drug numbs the stomach and therefore when you eat you dont feel full when you are full and tend to overeat. This has not caused weeight gain for me but it does give me that full to the throat feeling. I will say tho, I have been on Paxil and now Prozac and I would not trade my Prozac for anything...except Xanax! Kidding...kind of... Now, at 11, she takes 60 mg. and has for quite some time now. 5 mg. sounds very low, but perhaps your doctor is trying to build up slowly. I hope you see some results soon! Eileen - Our first psychologist also suggested meds first thing when dd was diagnosed. She explained that the state of mind that something like OCD puts a person in makes it very difficult (if not impossible) to accept & learn the therapy required to treat the OCD. You are unable to think clearly & usually don't understand/believe that the problems you're having can be helped by the therapy, so you don't cooperate. The meds help to calm down the thought process & allow you to reasonably view what's going on & makes it possible for you to concentrate & learn during the therapy. That's how it was explained to me. Guest guest
Another viewpoint to consider: some doctors feel that prozac isn't the best choice for children because it takes longer to work than other SSRIs.

Guest guest
Hi Connie. My son was on 70 mgs on prozac when he was 11 yrs old. He had no side effects with that. It took about 4 months to reach it's full effect. -- In , " bestmomconnie " <bestmomconnie@...> wrote: > > I have written about my daughter.
