Re: lack of eye contact

Hello~

I have experienced this with my niece, SID, LD, epilipsy, ADHD, speech; for a

long time we thought it was SID related. Now, it could be the learning

difficulties or the ADHD. I found that she isn't really ignoring me, as once

thought, she can't focus on " looking at me " --- especially when being

disciplined or trying to make an important point with her. Some children

can't look when told, " Look at me " ; their little minds aren't comprehending

for some reason. I am open to some opinions and suggestions on this one!

Kayla will look briefly, then turns away...still listening, but she can't

stay focused on eye-to-eye contact. I have her repeat what I said, she gets

most of it, but somewhere in the " input " - to - " translation " - to - " output "

things get scrambled.

Ever notice when taking a picture of the child, does he or she look into the

camera or away with their eyes? Kayla more often than not will look away with

her eyes, her face is towards the camera, it's weird, so I have to capture

her beautiful eyes and smile when she least expects the camera.

Good luck, and thanks~

I wish I could figure out why is intermittent

with her eye contact! She makes eye contact with

everyone except her teachers and therapists. It's kind

of strange! She's not autistic so that's not it. She's

gotten more social lately, she even has said hi to

strangers, so that's not it. She has receptive &

expressive speech delays, SID and weak hand muscles.

In speech yesterday, the ST said to her, " How do I

know that you're ready to listen? " That meant that she

had to look at her square in the face. That worked for

that session. Maybe you could try that!

Good luck!

just an observation re intermittant eye contact... my daughter

squeezes her eyes shut when she's someplace she doesn't

want to be (we just started Occupational Therapy; in time she'll

enjoy it).
