Guest guest
Hello. My name is Tami and I am the mother of 5 children, 9 year old twin boys, 4 year old twin girls and 18 month old daughter, Sara. I am not necessarily sure that Sara has apraxia, but I was I would however like to take this opportunity to tell you all a little about Sara. She was diagnosed at 2 weeks old with Ventral Septal Defects, Coloboma (an eye condition where the irises did not form properly and as a result her pupils are key-hole shaped) and microcephaly. she still has a very large soft spot, umbilical hernia, anemia, and slightly enlarged liver. We started noticing Sara was not reaching the typical developmental milestones, but we just attributed that to all the other medical problems. Well, eventually it dawned on us that there may be more issues here, so we had a developmental assessment done. This was at 17 months. The results showed her to be at the 8 month level in both physical and speech development. She still does not walk unless holding onto furmiture, she wont even walk if I hold her hands. Except for Cheerios, she will not eat any food that is not completely pureed (stage 1 baby food) everything else she just makes a gagging noise and spits it out. She has so far said " Up " but that was in a mimicking game, and has not said it since. She does babble quite a lot, even with different intonations (sp?). If i didnt know better I would swear she was just talking in a different language. She is a very affectionate happy-go-lucky little girl, with the worlds most beautiful smile. We do not at this point have any sort of diagnosis, but the Early Intervention program is working with her and we will be getting another assessment done on monday. Some people have suggested autism or PDD to me, her therapists dont think so though. They do think possibly apraxia or sensory intergration. anyhow.... I just had a few questions for those who are more well versed in this area than I am what is the difference between apraxia and sensory integration disorder? and can you only have one of them? also.....i noticed a couple of posts about brushing therapy and was wondering if someone could tell me more about it. Sara has serious texture issues, so this might be a good thing for her. well if you read this far, thanks, and sorry this turned out to be a novel tami
