Guest guest
My nephew was a grunter too. He is 6 now and know longer grunts but he's had a lot of lung problems. My daughter does a happy dance when she excited, She jumps up and down and flaps her arms. Maybe it his lungs? Has he been to a lung DR?? I really haven't a clue just offering a suggestion. Guest guest
I have a stupid question-could you tell if the grunting sounds like cave man sounds? My daughter who only has a few consistent words when she's healthy, has " progressed " from alot of high pitch sounds when excited and happy to these sounds that I think are grunting. Now, this week, she is making sounds that were actually prespeech sounds for one of my sons when he was 15mths old- " biddie biddie boo " and " dabbie dabbie dee. " (Lori Roth, my great slp, if you are reading this, I am excited about it-what do you think?). Thanks, Carolyn
Guest guest
Carolyn, Our daughter is 6 and non-verbal -- she can say no, mamamama, dadadada, byyyyyyye and a combination that's like bye-bye ma<da>. She has some other approximations but does not use them consistantly at this point. Her neurolgist (who is a very frank and straight-forward individual-- something I appreciate) refers to her as " gruntal " <sp?>. Those professionals who feel the need to use language a bit more sensitive usually say " hummer " . At any rate, the " gruntal " grunting is very specific in 's case to vocal stimming. When she " speaks " or attempts to speak it's simply an approximation -- it's not grunting. For her, grunting is the rhythnic " ua ua ua ua ua ua ua ua ua .... " and a sensory issue, not necessarily related to speach. I wouldn't say in her case it does not sound like a " caveman " , but it does sound very unusual (she's our 3rd child). Don't know if this helps one single bit but so glad to hear you're seeing improvments for your daughter! Best, Dana in Michigan rodgers@...
