Want to run something pass you guys

This has been on my mind for a long time. And I have been kicking it back and forths the whys and the why nots. I have been thinking of applying for our group a non-profit status, I would have to contact a attorney to draw up the paperworks and so forth. One of the things that I know is that I have one of the largest groups that I know of as far as I know of. And that is active members I am talking about. This is a pretty active group and we are really a good group. Okay that is some of my thinking. My whys for's doing a non-profit status, is many times in this group I have gotten and you have gotten post about folks with no insurance, no money to pay for the drugs we take and so forth. And I get so darn frustrated because there is nothing I can do but either

recommend another non-profit organization, and alot of the time they are not set up for that sort of help or I have to find a organization that will treat individuals and that is not always possible because of location of the organization and location of the individual. I have been asked before to apply for non-profit status because this group is a great group and people can see that we are a lot of help to one another. Now my reasons for wanting to go for non-profit, is that I can do the donation thingy:" you can't do that unless you are a non-profit organization and get the tax write off. I am pretty sure I am right. And I am not even sure if you are not a non-profit organization if you can even ask for donations. That is why I need to talk to a lawyer about this. One of the programs I would like to have is a

medical needs program: set up a program so that throughout the country (and I would have to limit this to the USA ) because I am not sure of international laws. I am not a lawyer. But the medical needs program would provide, care from a physician (in the network that I would set up) Help to get the medication needed by individuals who can not afford the medication. Provide public education Transportation for those who need rides and can not afford it. And so forth. I know this sounds like a big undertaking and I would have to start say like in those areas where I would have people who were with the organization and so forth. Let me give you a for instance: I am here in Southwestern Oklahoma, but I could easily set up so some of these plans for say, Oklahoma, Texas,

Arkansas, Kansas and Mo. And if I had people who wanted to work for the organization in other places then I could start programs in their areas. Be more than organization that just is in name only but one that works for the people it reaches out too. I might be biting more off than I can chew. That is why I am asking your thoughts.
