Fly catching (was: Black Death)

I sneak up on them.

I have figured out that they can only detect fast movement (like from a

swatting hand or tail) but are designed to ignore slow (like tree branches

moving in the breeze). So I wait until they land to rub their feet or have a

drink. Then I sneak up on them in slow-motion and veeeeery slowly land a

little plastic cup around them. When they realize they are trapped, it's too

late. Then I either take another cup or a piece of paper to cover the

openening and move it outside. Though it may fly right back in again if

you're not quick enough with the door or window.

I have a funny story that relates to the fly-catching thing

For some reason I don't comprehend, I met a guy at church that decided

to insist on telling me " You're a ninja, I know it! " and kept on

repeating that. Of course, knowing how far from the truth that was,

drove me nuts.

Then one night there, only a couple minutes after me telling him " I am

NOT a ninja! " a fly was driving people nuts, so I caught it with my

bare hands out of the air, without crushing it, and carried it outside

(or something, I can't remember exactly what I did) and hoped he

didn't catch me in the act I've always been better than most at

taking flies out of the picture, but it's *not* because of physical

speed or coordination, but because of calculation that increases my

chances of succeeding.
