Guest guest
Ditto!!!!! I think it is boredom and watching TV, I noticed the constant diatribe on the TV to eat, eat, eat. I am not a TV hog, but, 5 nights a week, I have 1-2 favorite shows I sit down for, and then the adds start, and I start looking at the fridge, otherwise, I can play on the computer or read, and not have the urge to eat crap. I make an effort, not so much not to eat, but, to get away form the TV so I am not encouraged to eat crap. Because I have started a new gym program, i am ravenous at night, so I feel for you. larryOn Dec 12, 2008, at 11:58 PM, Don Kennedy wrote:Does anyone know of something (besides will-power) that will help control appetite in the evening. Guest guest
You guys are not alone! It is actually a positive note to know I am not the only person who can eat rationally in the morning and thru the day, but at nite I begin with dinner, then go for seconds (and sometimes thirds), then want dessert, then want seconds of THAT, too! On top of that, I am in the habit of taking food to bed to eat while I read. That at least can be controlled by reading before I go to bed... but I ENJOY reading in bed. And eating comes with the territory, it seems. These are not uncontrollable cravings (tho I make little or no effort to actually control them), just niggling desires for food. But why only at nite? I don't have these desires during the day. I do notice that if I have an activity that keeps my hands busier than just reading a book (such as a hobby or working on the computer), I am less likely to be eating at the same time. Watching TV is an opportune time to have something, but I doubt it is the commercials at fault, since we normally only watch pay channels without commercials, and when we DO watch the networks, commercials are always muted almost immediately. We can attribute a plethora of side-effects to the meds, but I wonder if finding some way to blame this one on them, wouldn't be taking that a bit too far. > > > > > Does anyone know of something (besides will-power) that will help > > control appetite in the evening. Guest guest
When I want 'something' in the evening what works for me is a protein smoothie. Even easier than that is a scoop of protein powder in some applesauce or yoghurt, cinnamon ... yum. Your body's craving nutrition, dinner is the time to fill in the gaps, correct the mistakes made earlier in the day. No doubt it's your protein quota that you've slipped up on, so make your evening graze as healthy as possible. Guest guest
I only have the problem with overeating at night in social situations. When I am alone at night, even if otherwise preoccupied with TV or reading, I do these things if tempted: (All this assuming you have gotten enough nutrition earlier in the day and evening) First, if I crave sweets of any kind including cola, I chew gum sweetened with xylotol. For any other cravings I do a quick round of push-ups or sit-ups, curls, etc. The endorphines tend to make the urge go away, plus you have the added benefit of the additional exercise. Most important of all, don't keep the bad stuff in the house. Substitute a crunchy carrot to get past the boredom. Don't sit there with a bag or can or carton of anything. Get a single serving, put the container away, walk away, then eat. I will burn a calorie consumer candle for you all at mass.
