So far reading and writing are good for us and he is in First Grade. His

reading was tested and he is well above the 30% that is needed to qualify for

individual reading.I am not putting down Dr.s but they can be wrong too.So

far the problems that are associated with apraxia in this area doesn't seem

to be a problem. Good Luck.Gretchen

Hi Gretchen,

I meant to answer your question about percentiles when it came up before. If I

remember right the 30% you refer to as your son's score in reading on some test

was a percentile, and you were wondering what it meant.

A percentile of 50 is the middle. Percentiles between 16 and 84 correspond to

one standard deviation above and below this middle point (the mean). Often,

anything between 16 and 84 is considered the average range. Some people use one

and a half or one and a quarter standard deviations above and below the mean,

which gives an even wider " average " range. Your son's percentile score of 30 is

solidly within the average range. It puzzles me that a percentile as high as 30

would be the cutoff for reading

help, but good for you! A cutoff that high means kids with basically normal

abilities can get extra help. The statistical difference between percentiles of

40 and 60 isn't that much, but the difference between 16 and 30 is statistically

quite a lot.

I hope that helps.
