We had been pretty lucky too with not getting sick for the past few years.

Unfortunately we did get hit with a really bad cold that my kids just got over.

It lasted 2.5 weeks!! During that time we were doing GAPS too so eating very

clean. However on the bright side, two other people who also caught the nasty

cold one adult and one child, ended up with pneumonia. Count your blessings

right? Eating clean has definitely reduced the frequency, duration and severity

of illnesses though.

Our family seems to get a mild cold every 4 months or so when the weather

significantly changes, but it usually only lasts 2-4 days. Before we ate

traditional foods we would get sick more often and for much longer periods of

time.

My two boys and I have been enjoying not getting sick also! I can't

actually remember the last time my boys had a cold.

I had a light cold a year ago - I never really felt sick, but I lost my

voice for about a month, and I sounded awful (since I teach, my voice never

really got a chance to rest, so recovery was slow).

I completely believe that our diet is helping keep us strong.

Can a dad chime in? :)

We are at about the one year mark of a low carb wapf diet. We went from A

constant game of " musical illnesses " year after year to almost zero illness in

the last year. We were hyper diligent about washing hands, hand sanitizer etc.

but one member of the family would get sick and it would run through all of us.

Repeat.

In the last year, with no hand sanitizer and much less hand washing, there have

been maybe 3-4 minor illnesses. Probably an 80-90% decrease.

I have no doubt it & #39;s our diet. We were probably all terribly D deficient,

generally malnourished and missing all the protective foods like traditional

fats, none broths and fermented food (health is not about avoiding bacteria but

consuming huge amounts of healthy bacteria!) The families that I know that have

switched to traditional diets have all had the same experience. The ones that

havent have found no relief in the mild winter.

Thank you for your input Gene!!! :) Do you think the lower carb thing also has

something to do with it?

Thanks for the info. This seems to be pretty consistent then. I'm also starting

to learn about homeopathy so that when the illnesses come, I am prepared. I just

don't know how to deal with baby illnesses, to be honest. was adopted a

year and a half ago and he was a very sick little boy at the orphanage. Every

other month he was on antibiotics. Now my new son is 5 months and he hasn't been

sick yet. But I'm assuming that's because he's breastfed. I DREAD the first

illnesses and babies getting sick. ish. ish. I hope learning a bit now will

prepare me for those times.

Thank you! Do you do anything when it hits, or do you let it run its' course? I

make a big old pot of broth and make sure we're consuming crazy amounts of it. I

also use grapefruit seed oil at the first sign of it, but I wasn't sure if that

all really shortens the life of a cold, or if it was coincidence. Thank you

again!!!

In my family's exeperience, the diet and lifestyle definitely play a role. My

step son used to be on antibioics alot when he was little.

After changing to our more natural diet, his colds and antibiotic use definitely

decreased. We later discovered that he and my husband have immune deficiency

disorders. While many chdren with this are on low dose proftlactic antibiotics,

our son is not. Both of them get sick rarely for those with " normal " immune

systems even though they are immune impaired

The boy developed nasty plaque and gum disease within a year after his type 1

diabetes diagnosis and we had taken him off his morning plain yogurt. The

immunologist and dentist couldn't figure out what was wrong. We had to have his

teeth cleaned every 2 or 3 months. Nothing worked. We put him back on yogurt and

the plaque build up quickly went away and working a few years all the gum damage

healed.

So even with all the immune disorders, my household gets sick much less than

others

No, not really. Since embarking on this journey of eating a WAPF-inspired diet

5 years ago, we have only gotten minor colds here and there. And it's not

because our kids live in a bubble and aren't exposed to illness - we are out and

about all the time, to public places and playdates with others (one playdate had

50 people!) We also enrolled our kids, 21 months and 4 years old, in a

Montessori school last fall, and many of their classmates have been gone for

days at a time with strep, ear infections, and other illnesses. I attribute our

robust health to our diet, and working with our bodies to strengthen them

against illness (with homeopathy, vitamins, probiotics, and herbs) rather than

assaulting them with chemicals and other toxins (vaccines and unnecessary

pharmaceuticals.)

Yes, supporting your body with proper nutrition works THAT well! :) It's just

like when cows eat grass instead of corn; it's what they were made to eat, it's

what keeps them healthy. It has nothing to do with this winter being mild,

because people don't get any sicker at 10F than they do at 30F. It's the cold

weather in general that keeps people cooped up inside in enclosed spaces, with

germs recirculating through the air. Not getting as much natural vit D in the

winter months is part of it, too, because many people don't supplement with D3

and are therefore more susceptible to the increased number of germs they're

exposed to.

So glad to hear you're enjoying the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle!

Spread the word :)

We started following a traditional diet 3 years ago and no more strep. My

when he can. Maybe he'll realize it someday.

I do. I & #39;m convinced that carbs (grain and sugar), are problematic not only

for maintaining an optimum body weight but also for the immune system.

1.They cause radical blood sugar swings which lead to significant hormonal

imbalances. Hormones are the " operating manual " of the body. Mess with them and

all manner of bad things happen. (read " Why we get Fat and what to do about it "

and " Good calories, bad calories " by Taubes)

2. They can fuel the growth of harmful bacteria and yeasts. This can create

vulnerabilities in the bacteria lining of you gut which is the vast majority of

immune system. (this is also why fermented foods and collagen rich bone broths

are so helpful).

3. They promote glycation (read destruction) of body tissues. What & #39;s really

scary is that your brain is especially vulnerable to this. Search " type 3

diabetes " an you will find volumes of information that Alzheimer & #39;s ( and

most dementia) is really a symptom of long term " carb poisoning. " (insulin

resistance is certainly operative here).

4. They contribute to oxidative stress levels and generalized, chronic

inflammation. Inflammation is basically the physical expression of stress. If

you are inflamed, your body is in a state of stress for some reason. One effect

of stress is to shut off your immune system (as well as many other body

systems). Stress is intended to save your life from a short term physical threat

by diverting all your energy to running from the lion, for example. Dealing

with a pathogen can wait Well, what happens if you are chronically stressed

(inflamed)? Your defenses are down and you & #39;re ittle more than a petri dish

waiting for whatever pathogen you come across.

Im not saying that any amount for grain or sugar carbs will cause all the above

problems. As with almost everything, the " poison is in the dose. " . The context

here is the Standard American Diet which is around 65-80% grain and sugar carbs.

At that level, obesity and all manner of degenerative and chronic illnesses are

simply a manner of time. What & #39;s a safe level? Im not sure but I think

individuals vary in their ability to eat carbs and not suffer the above. Im

currently persuaded that the safest grain and sugar carbs are white rice,

potatoes and natural sweeteners. I personally keep those to under 5% of my daily

calories (I average 4,000 calories a day). Some seem to be able to handle up to

25-30%.

Just my 2 cents :)

So glad you asked this question-- I was wondering the same thing! We

definitely cleaned up our diet this year and are seeing much less

severity/duration of colds. And we've even been able to avoid passing

those ones around when they do happen (which wasn't the case last year).

Thank you for the info. Good to know. I are supplementing with D3 as well. But

we started late. Not until about November or so and we didn't get sick before

then either. But we're eating/drinking bone broth a few times a week at least

and raw milk as well. We just ran out. :( and won't get any for a month or so.

I'm hoping that doesn't decrease our immunity. Knock on wood. We shall see.

Thank you!!!!

I think there are a lot of variables which lead someone to " health " . Even

though I believe healthy eating leads to healthy bodies (and minds) there is

no way I think that is the only variable. I think people can eat very

healthily and still get sick, still get cancer, still have problems. And I

know people who live on pop tarts, soda and boxed food and experience none

of those things.

Then there is the aspect of " what is healthy " . Does it include wheat, or not

include wheat? Other grains? Ancient wheat? Sprouted? Amount of carbs?

Sugar? Is " natural " sugar OK, but others not? Do you eat food cooked or raw?

Grocery store meat or grass-fed? Do the chickens eat soy? Do you eat organ

meat? Fatty fish? Vegetable oils? I know various people who are all learned

and knowledgeable who are not in agreement.

I choose to eat the way we do because it's the best I can do with the

current knowledge that I have. Much of it is on faith. And I hope for the

best. But I have no illusions that x is any guarantee of y. There are too

many other factors.

So true!!! I think we have the same type of hubby. OH. And I've gotten him to

lower his pasteurized milk intake too. He hasn't given up the cereal. :( I buy

him the cascadian farms crap and he knows he can't have it while my son is

awake. I don't want him eating that crap. He eats it as " dessert " and not as

morning food. So it's not every day. Thank God. He tells me almost every day

that he knows our kids are healthy because of how we eat and he thanks me for

it. That's super sweet. I have had to stop the " worry " over his health and know

that he will eventually come around completely. This man only ate canned veggies

when we first got married. YIKES! He's come a LONG way already. ;) Now he sees

that all of them had crooked teeth because of his mom's nutrition and how they

ate growing up. That's HUGE!

that he will eventually come around completely. This man only ate canned veggies

when we first got married. YIKES! He's come a LONG way already. ;) Now he sees

that all of them had crooked teeth because of his mom's nutrition and how they

ate growing up. That's HUGE!

daughter was one strep throat away from being recommended for tonsil removal. We

started following a traditional diet 3 years ago and no more strep. My husband

is the only one who gets sick, likely, because he won't change his eating habits.

He still hits the white nasty bread, candy and fast food pretty hard when he

can. Maybe he'll realize it someday.

You are right. Yours only ate canned veggies, and mine thought Velveeta was

cheese. We have a long journey ahead of us. But a healthy one. I really try

to not push too hard, one small change at a time. When we married, I wasn't

nearly as crunchy as I am now.

I already chimed in once here about how healthy we have been, but it

was all reconfirmed this morning. When I arrived at my son's bus stop

today, the other parents were all discussing the severity of the coughs and

colds they have had in their families lately. I hadn't been aware that

anything was going around!

I was talking about this with someone this week. It's been really bad. In the

last two weeks we have been directly exposed to families with really bad colds,

playing with them etc... And I'm still waiting to see if we get sick... But so

far, it seems like we have not caught anything. I even drove a little boy that

I'm pretty sure had the vicious stomach bug that is going around And we still

didn't get sick. Crazy. Knock on wood. ;)
