Guest guest
Rhonda Music therapy is a related service for our school system. I am thinking she is not a therapist hired by the school system. ACtually I dont know who she works for!!! Sorry. I dont know if it is offered everywhere. I know there arent lots of colleges with a music therapy program so I dont think music therapist are a dime a dozen. From what I know and have observed music therapy is similar to OT and PT in that physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioral and social functioning are treated but with music and musical instruments. I believe it has been found to be particularly useful for autism. There is a lot on the internet about it if you are interested. My son loves music and his first spoken words were songs so I think it is a shame they will not allow him to receive this therapy. I hope you have better luck. Just do an internet search of music therapy and you will come up with alot! I am in northeast IN and we have a local college that offers a music therapy degree so that may be why our school system provides one. I dont think she even sees any children at my sons preschool though so she must serve several counties. > HI , > > Could you explain about music therapy/evaluation. Guest guest
Hi , You will be interested in the following memo; Subject: List of Related Services in IDEA---Un-Exhaustive: OSERS Clarifies that the List of Related Services in IDEA (Section 300.24) is Not Exhaustive In a letter dated June 9, 2000 to the American Music Therapy Association, The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) clarified that the list of related services in IDEA (Section 300.24) is not exhaustive. If a child’s IEP team determines that an unlisted service is needed in order for a child with a disability to benefit from special education, it must be included in the IEP and provided at no cost to the family. The OSERS letter emphasized that related service decisions for any particular child must be made based on that child’s individual needs. If you are interested in a copy of the OSERS letter, contact the Family & Advocates Partnership for Education (FAPE) coordinating office at: (888) 248-0822 (toll free) (612) 827-7770 (TTY) http://www.fape.org/ " >http://www.fape.org/ Mike Savory AWAK(e)A © 2001 " Advocacy With Abundant Keys to Excellence and Access " Offering Advocacy in: Community Service, Student Advocacy, Facilitation & Mediation (Volunteer) Adolescence Doesn't Die IT Just Gets Buried !... Guest guest
Hi , I'm not sure about your area, but here in Oregon if they TELL you that your child NEEDS a service or that they are going to do it etc. etc. they are legally bound to do it! And get EVERYTHING in writing! Here that would be easy grounds for a lawsuit. I would encourage you to tape record your IEP meetings and take an advocate of some sort, whether it be your case worker or a friend, to the meeting with you. Is there an Advocacy group in your area? There should be a free advocacy center in your state that provides free legal assistance to disabled people, including having people attend your IEPs. I can try to dig out my list of states with their phone numbers if I knew the area where you live. I have had to have a caseworker present at a couple of rougher IEP meetings and let me tell you it does make a world of difference because they are accountable to the county and state level (I have a state case worker and a county worker). Anyway, I can understand your frustration---been there, done that. I hope you find someone to help advocate for you. Try calling the ARC in your area for advocacy numbers if you don't know where to start. They are a great resource too. Good luck, Tammy [ ] denial of music therpay Hi. I just wanted to share some of my thoughts today. Once again I am confused by the school system. They called an IEP to discuss my son's music therapy evaluation. For 6 months I have been hearing about how much my son would benefit from music therapy. He was finally evaluated and from the sound of the preschool teacher, he would have no problem qualify. In fact I thought he was already getting the services and I just had to sign off. Well today I went in for the meeting and again they told me that although he would enjoy it he just wasn't severe enough to qualify. It is like this with everything. I am so sick of fighting so I just signed the papers that I agreed after expressing my opinion and left it. Now I am feeling angry with myself. I dont know how those people sleep at night. They tell me all these things that would help him and then thy deny those things. The next IEP meeting will be the fight about extended school year (summer therapy). I better start preparing now because it will be ugly and I already know they will fight against it. I am looking for a new school system for my son. My husband and I would even contemplate a move. We would like to find a school in Fort Wayne, IN, or if necessary we have considered a move to Indianapolis IN or Cincinnati OH. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions to any of the above?? Thanks
Guest guest
it is the law for a school district to provide the most appropriate education for your child. If they do not have a program they must institute one or send him where there is one.

Do you know if this goes for the EI through the county too? I have requested Jenna to have a speech therapist twice a week...in addition to her infant language specialist and the OT. Guest guest
For the mom who's child was denied Music Therapy.....remember, every time the school refuses or denies services to your child, they MUST put it in writing, along with their reason why the service is being denied. I can't stress enough how important a paper trail is when dealing with the schools. Lets face it, we are our childs best and only advocate, the schools are out for the almighty buck! Good luck, don't give up! , mom to 3 great kids!
