Guest guest
Hello Carole Glad you are here looking for info!! I am just a mom of a beautiful 3.9 year old oral & verbal apraxic son. had reflux as a infant. He lost weight from birth to about 4 weeks of age. He could not breast feed successfully. Then when we gave him formula everything would run out his nose??? The doctor that I took him to at the time missed the boat on everything. When would nurse I would never hear the suck, suck, swallow like the other babies. It was as though he could not coordinate the sucking, swallowing & breathing all together. was born 3 1/2 weeks early. To this day gags real easy. The slp tried to do a feeding evaluation on him recently by putting peanut butter just inside his mouth & he just about tossed it! Even brushing his teeth can cause him to gag. As a baby would choke on just about everything. Don't know if any of this helps, I am sure some of the professionals can give you some great info. Best wishes, Tammy I. mom to 3.9 apraxic, 6 next week, 17 stuttered severly as child, 21 in 3 weeks ----- Original Message ----- I am a graduate student in Speech Language Pathology at East Carolina University Distant Education program and have a question. I am doing a research paper on dysphagia and my question is: Can oral apraxia affect the swallow? All the information I have found says that oral apraxia does not affect the non-speech activities performed with the muscles such as coughing, chewing or swallowing. Can you enlighten me on this topic. I would appreciate any information you have. Thank you, Carole
