Guest guest
Hi Chasley, We started using sign with our 4 year old and he loves it. The 1st book we got was a sign language dictionary from Amazon called The Comprehensive Signed English Language. It is wonderful and has good reviews also. It sells for about $25. My 8 year old uses it also to look up words to use with his brother. It is very simple and has a nice drawing with directions underneath each sign. They also have many videos, the one we got that all of our kids enjoy and it covers many words is called Talking Hands. It uses kids in everyday situations using sign and then an adult shows you how to do it. Very well done. Guest guest
Dear Chasley, We taught our Apraxic son signs for words that a child who could speek uses alot. More, all done, juice, eat, book, play, it is truly endless the signs you can teach them. I think it depends on what cole usually tries to tell you often that is how we started. Now that JAck who is 2 1/2 and is using his wonderful words he does not use the signs as often the one that he signs while saying still is " More " which pretty much covers a wide range of needs. We are now trying to get him to use more verbs since he uses " More " for everything. More was his first sign and let me say when he started to sign " More " he said it within 1 week that shows how awesome signing is. Good luck, Eileen Oh and 1 more thing we never used a book our slp gave us print outs of the signs, but there are so many books at the library just for kids. --- Chasley <Chasleyp@...> wrote: > > > > When you guys teach your apraxia kids sign what > are some of the words you > > start out with? Guest guest
Hi Chasley, Dani and Never did I mean to upset anyone. Just felt I needed to respond. When my son was first born I joined a parent helping parent group via the phone. We were reminded over and over to becareful on how we worded our responses to other parents. I always kept that in mind. And yes, many times our responses via print can come across different then when said in person. We are all here to help one another and of course our children. And I cannot BELIEVE how you quoted me verbatim from the FIRST meeting. With everything you do....you remembered what I said. You are incredible!!!! I must go get the kids ready for school and start my crazy work week!! Have a good day. All the best, Lori D.
