Guest guest
Hi, It has now been a few days since I have been glued to the computer trying to find out more about apraxia. My daughter - beautiful, happy, shy, cautious is 32 months. Here is some of her story. I guess around 2 years old, I started to really notice that her language development was lagging behind. I contacted a group that works with kids and neurological disorders, to get her " assessed " , and into a playgroup I had heard about. At that time, only had half a dozen words, but was a great communicator with her own signs, and showing, and finding books with pictures of things she wants. She subsequently had her hearing checked - OK, and was assessed by a speech therapist. They said wait until 2.5 yrs. We did. did get alot more words. Most missing the last consonant syllable. She is now up to ~80 words, and is putting some together with 2-3 words like " Big Pooh Book " and " Mee mee down " (Mee mee is to her). She saw a speech therapist again around 2 weeks ago, she suggested it may be apraxia, and because waiting lists for public individual or group therapy are so long (~1 yr), we are going to get private speech therapist. She saw her for the first time last week. I want to talk about so many things - what is like - is there anyone else like her? - what my feelings/insecurities/fears/hopes are - do others feel the same? - what to do? where to go? what to know? For now I just wanted to get started, listen, and learn from all of you who seem so knowledgeable and experienced or just uncertain, like me. So Hi! Guest guest
Welcome , My sounds like your to a " T " , (add in a little stubborness and some tantrums). has closer to 200 words/approxiamtions, most of them picked up in the last 3 months. She has even more if you count all the times she echoes what I say. You're on the right road if you've started speech therapy. If is like , though, warming up and being receptive to the therapist might make things go a little slower. For that reason I try to work with at home (not easy lately- with everything, she always wants to be the leader and doesn't take well to " let's do this " types of things). You may want to look into the efa's. is on ProEfa (purchased from http://shopinserviceinc.goemerchant2.com) and I'm sure it is helping in her attempts at speech (in any rate, it cleared up her eczema 100%). You'll find lots of good advice here and on the apraxia websites. And, sometimes more necessary, support from others who know what you're going through. Good luck, Barbara mememom2002 wrote: > I want to talk about so many things - what is like - is there > anyone else like her? - what my feelings/insecurities/fears/hopes > are - do others feel the same? - what to do? where to go? what to > know? > For now I just wanted to get started, listen, and learn from all of > you who seem so knowledgeable and experienced or just uncertain, like > me. > So Hi! >
