Guest guest
Chasley, My son is 4.3 years. When he was diagnosed 2 years ago with verbal apraxia I wasn't sure of the diagnoses either. At the time I decided speech therapy and preschool could benefit any child and not doing it might hurt my son so I did it. I'll never know if it made a difference or not but my son is talking in full sentences now. I do know receptive skills being ahead of speech is a symptom of apraxia. If both receptive and speech are equally delayed then probably just development- ally delayed. Be careful with thinking he can repeat words when in mood. I thought my son might just be being stubborn about not talking but that wasn't the case. You don't want to hurt your child self esteem by assuming he can do something he can't. Also don't think just because your older child talks all the time that has anything to do with your younger child not talking. My older son still talks all the time(a symptom of ADD) but my younger son can now assert himself into the conversation just fine. Also all kids are different so your son may never exactly fit in with any diagnoses. For example my son had just as hard of time signing as talking. The other kids in his regular preschool class picked up signing easily but he could only do about 10 signs. Still the 10 signs helped to communicate with him. The good news is it gets less overwhelming as time goes by. Good luck.
