Guest guest
Carol, Here are my 2 cents........I have almost 4 yr old apraxic twins--also went the EI route and last May they entered pre-school hand program (birthday is April) and then attend this year and will next year. I also teach Kindergarten. I think that when kids get out of a public pre-school hand program they should attend the public Kindergarten program----because they will (hopefully) remained classified and continue the needed speech, OT, PT etc services. If the child leaves the pre-school program and enters a reg nursey school then does he lose all of the services that the school had to provide and you need to provide them yourself???? I know that Kindergarten is not a requirement in NJ at least, but at least he will be getting the social, language, academics (readiness skills) and the IEP needed services. There are plenty of kids not " ready " for Kindergarten and today what does that mean? Does that mean you need to know your abc's or write your name or be able to stand in a line? Where I teach my students do not have any of these skills, whereas (I'm sure) some schools the kids have those skills....and perhaps your son will always be " below age level across the board " and so what if he is....we are all not " straight A " people.....Some teachers forget that concentrating on kids strengths rather than weaknesses might help.........that's a gigantic pet peeve of mine!!!!!!!!! Finally, when do his present teachers feel that your child will be ready???? I do know that many professionals disagree with my opinion on this as well as some CST members. In my school, we have an all day kindergarten and for the children that are not " ready " they sometimes attend pre-school in the AM and Kindergarten in the PM. So in the AM they get the pre-school " academics " and in the PM we have lunch, our specials like gym, music and art and learning stations----which the kids consider play time...so it more or less introduces the whole day routine to the child and provides the services and structure to hopefully get the child ready for the following year....Hope this gives you some options to think about...feel free to e-mail me privately!!!!!!!!!!
