Guest guest
I don't really want to create a controversial here but I think that Dani was giving me advice not at a professional level but a mother to mother level. She probably remembered that my son Cole does have speech and has mild apraxia if that and was just trying to give me some easy pointers to go with. Guest guest
Hi Chasley, Dani and Lori, I agree with all of you because you are coming from different schools of thought that I have been in and out of. I agree with Lori -she makes excellent points about safety for our children, etc. and I know she has personal experience with sign language because I know her very well - and her child is hearing impaired and apraxic. I also know that the last thing Lori would want to do is upset anyone. I remember at the first CHERAB meeting Lori attended she came up to me at the end and said " Don't think I'm being rude when I'm looking up at the ceiling during the meetings -it's the only way I can keep from crying listening to the stories " I also agree with Dani in that just about all apraxic children develop their " own " sign language that only we -the parents - understand. I remember putting Tanner's " own " signs into his communication book on his first day of Preschool because I knew that they wouldn't understand him. Tanner did have universal signs like Lori said they should have -but in his attempts to explain - everything!!- he made up signs all the time too. I used to say he was like Harpo Marx or something - he'd make himself " heard " by acting it out. I believe if we all got together it would be fine and we would all agree with the various views -sometimes in writing vs talking points can be taken different than what is meant -and since we are not there to explain any of these type of misunderstandings, our points are not seen clearly. Hey -maybe this just shows us once again the frustration our little ones go through every day! Hugs to all of you! =====
